Is It Time to See an Albany Fertility Doctor?

When you are struggling with infertility, you may feel like you are alone. However, it is actually a common struggle, and over 430,000 people in New York share an infertility diagnosis.
If you have had difficulty conceiving, you may wonder when you should see a fertility doctor (reproductive endocrinologist). Currently, guidelines recommend women make an appointment with a fertility doctor if they are under the age of 35 and have tried without success to conceive for one year. Women over the age of 35 should only try to conceive for six months before making an appointment with a fertility doctor.
If you suffer from other conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, severe endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, or have had recurrent miscarriages, you should also consider transitioning to a fertility doctor.
In Albany, there are two fertility doctors who are members of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
What Is a Fertility Doctor?
Fertility doctors are actually called reproductive endocrinologists. Reproductive endocrinologists are specially trained to treat the disorders of the reproductive system. Not limited to infertility, these disorders also include hormonal imbalances, menstrual disorders, sexual dysfunction, and recurrent miscarriage.
Reproductive endocrinologists first complete a residency in obstetrics/gynecology, and go on for further study in reproductive endocrinology. They complete a two to three year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology, and must pass a written and oral examination to be considered board certified in reproductive endocrinology

Interview
Before you choose a fertility doctor, it is helpful to schedule a consultation with the ones you are considering. Bring your complete medical history with you, and prepare a list of questions you would like answered. Topics for these questions can include the fertility doctor’s experience, areas of specialization, and treatment philosophy.
