New York Infertility Insurance Coverage

The cost of fertility treatments can add up quickly. Often, multiple courses of fertility medication are needed, and more than one IVF cycle is often necessary. In order to help defray some of the cost, couples look to their insurance companies for coverage.
Thankfully for Albany residents, New York is one of around 15 states that has a mandate in place that requires insurance companies to either offer treatment or cover treatment.
According to Article 32 of the New York Insurance Law, insurance companies must include coverage for care that would otherwise be covered by the policy, even if the condition results in infertility. The law was amended in 2002 to clarify that inurance policies must provide infertility treatment for women between 21 and 44. However, it includes certain exemptions, such as IVF, gamete intrafallopian tube transfers, or zygote intrafallopian tube transfers.
Residents of New York are also eligible for IVF grants. More information on this program can be found by contacting the New York Department of Health.
This infertility insurance mandate is very helpful for residents of New York, but before you begin treatment, it is still a good idea to talk directly with a representative of your insurance plan. That way, you can learn exactly what will be covered and at what amount, so you will not be shocked by bills that come later
