Is Meeting Your Egg Donor Right for You?

What you should know before you decide

by Missi Manning, Senior Case Manager, Western and Central Regions, The Donor SOURCE, November 3, 2010

As you may know, the egg donation process is of an anonymous nature. Egg donors may be known by nicknames or just a random ID number to help preserve anonymity. In most cases, both recipients and donors prefer this type of egg donation cycle. However, there may be a time when you might think to yourself: “What is my donor like?” “Who is this woman that is helping me create life?” or “I wonder if my donor and I would be friends.”

These are all natural questions you might ask yourself after selecting an egg donor. The curiosity you are feeling is something most recipients go through; however some of those act upon their curiosity and feel the need to make a real connection with their donor, rather than a virtual one.

What about surrogacy?

by Pamela MacPhee, Author, Delivering Hope: The Extraordinary Journey of a Surrogate Mom, October 29, 2010

You can find out how surrogates are screened from surrogacy agencies, learn about embryo transfers from your fertility doc, and research the legal requirements in your state or country.

But after I made an offer to my cousin and his wife to carry a baby as their surrogate mom, what we really wanted to know before we made a decision was how it would actually feel and how that relationship would work. How would we navigate sharing a pregnancy, what would the emotional and physical challenges be, and what kind of relationship could we create to support a successful journey?

Thinking about IVF from a different perspective

When I read that Robert Edwards, a former British Cambridge Professor, was given the 2010 Nobel Prize for Medicine I was thrilled. He received the award for his work in developing the technique for in vitro fertilization (IVF) while working with Patrick Steptoe, a British gynecologist and surgeon who died in 1988. Together they opened the first IVF clinic in 1980. Since then an estimated 4 million babies have been born through in vitro fertilization and thousands of fertility clinics have emerged around the world.

Question:

When I am told to take 2 amps of Menopur, is that using two vials of the dry mix with 1 cc of diluent? Would 300 units of Bravelle be three vials dry to 1cc of diluent? I just want to understand the definition of an amp and if it is the same as using the word 'units'.

This month’s legal update begins in California where the California Supreme Court recently ruled that a ban on same-sex marriage in the state is unconstitutional. Also in California, the state legislature enacted a new law restricting a surrogacy agency’s ability to manage client funds. Next, the update discusses a recent ruling in Mexico recognizing the right of homosexuals to marry in Mexico City. Finally, the update discusses a clinic outside of Barcelona, Spain, which is in the practice of allowing embryos of former patients to be adopted by current patients without the original embryo owners’ knowledge or consent.
