More U.S. Women Choosing IUDs for Birth Control: Study

A growing number of U.S. women appear to be opting for intrauterine devices (IUDs) as their birth control method, with the number more than doubling in just two years in one study. Researchers, whose findings were published in the journal Fertility & Sterility, said this is good news, since IUDs and contraceptive implants are the most effective forms of reversible birth control. When IUDs first came out, there were concerns - later disproved - that they might raise the risk of pelvic infection and jeopardize women's future fertility.

Conversion Leads Chicago Fertility Doctor Down a New Path

Dr. Anthony Caruso, A Chicago reproductive endocrinologist and doctor at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, has proposed opening the St. Anne Center for Reproductive Health. The center would be one of a handful of clinics in the United States that helps couples struggling to have children within the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. It would not offer in vitro fertilization (IVF), artificial insemination or certain medicines often prescribed as a course of treatment.

Walgreens Offers Fertility Services

Walgreens is meeting that need in the western suburbs by offering fertility pharmacy services at its location at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. The CDH Walgreens was designated a Fertility Center of Excellence in June, making it one of only seven Walgreens in the country that stocks fertility medication and features staff specially trained in fertility treatment. The only other pharmacy like it in Illinois is at Northwestern Hospital.

The Rev. Thomas Milota of Ss. Peter and Paul, located two blocks from the proposed clinic site, says it is a matter of defending human dignity.

Naperville Council to Readdress Fertility Clinic Plan

The plan for a fertility clinic for downtown Naperville will makes its second appearance before the City Council Tuesday night. Dr. Randy Morris, the physician proposing the facility at Benton Avenue and Washington Street, is a Naperville resident and an established figure in the city, credited with helping many area couples who have had problems conceiving a child. Morris’ attorney Bernard Citron stressed that the clinic was a permitted use under city code. The petitioner, Medical Properties, LLC, proposes a combined in vitro fertilization/surgery center at the site.

Fertility Doctor Surprised by Opposition in Naperville

Dr. Randy Morris is typically welcomed with open arms, especially by couples attempting to conceive a child. So the licensed physician, specializing in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, was taken aback by recent opposition to his plans to consolidate his practice in downtown Naperville. At a recent city council meeting, more than a dozen residents spoke against the plan, including some who said Morris would take advantage of female college students eager to sell their eggs for cash. Others objected to the procedures being performed near schools and churches.

IVF Babies Denied U.S. Citizenship

Chicago native Ellie Lavi could not have been happier when she gave birth to beautiful twin girls overseas. She found that the U.S. State Department did not share in her joy when she went to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv to apply for citizenship for her children. An embassy staffer wanted to know whether Lavi got pregnant at a fertility clinic. She said yes and was told that her children were not eligible for citizenship unless she could prove that the egg or sperm used to create the embryo was from an American citizen. A child adopted overseas by a U.S.
