Helping a Family through Egg Donation: An Egg Donor Shares Her Story

Some women, due to age or physical reasons, cannot produce their own viable eggs. But today, through donor eggs and in vitro fertilization (IVF), these women can still carry and give birth to a child. Amanda (not her real name) is a 27-year-old Georgia woman who chose to become an egg donor after watching friends and family go through the sorrow of infertility. “A friend of mine went through IVF treatment three times,” Amanda says. “And my aunt was never able to have children of her own. I saw the effect that this had on them.”

Empty Follicle Syndrome (EFS) is a rare-occurring condition where no eggs are retrieved during an IVF procedure, despite the ovaries having many potential follicles. Out of all women diagnosed with infertility, only a fraction will not be able to conceive using their own eggs. Having EFS meant Holly was part of that small percentage. Holly and her husband Ryan contacted an egg donation agency and began their search for “the one.” After sorting through numerous candidates, Holly and Ryan chose the donor they call “Angel.”

Georgia 'Personhood' Bill In Works

wo Georgia lawmakers are considering legislation similar to the "personhood" referendum rejected by voters in Mississippi earlier this month. Sen. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, and Rep. Rick Crawford, D-Cedartown, have both supported similar legislation previously declaring that life begins at fertilization and seeking to ban abortion.

Don't Blame IVF for Rancic's Cancer, Experts Say

Giuliana Rancic’s recent diagnosis of breast cancer at age 36 has generated a lot of emotional support for the E! host — and some worries about the connection between fertility treatments and the disease. Despite the concerns, there has been no evidence linking IVF treatments to a heightened risk of breast cancer in healthy women, according to Dr. Mark Perloe, medical director at Georgia Reproductive Specialists. It’s even possible that IVF might be protective.

Researchers: In vitro increases high blood pressure risk

Women who use donor eggs to get pregnant by in vitro fertilization may be at higher risk for preeclampsia, according to a new study published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Preeclampsia is a dangerous condition that occurs when a woman's blood pressure rises during pregnancy and her kidneys stop being able to retain protein.
