Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Lead the Country in Multiple Births

According to National Vital Statistics Report for 2006 to 2008, Massachusetts almost leads the country in twin births at 43.2 twins per 1,000 births. New Hampshire isn't far behind, with 38.9 twins per 1,000 births and a fourth-place national ranking. (New Jersey leads the nation by a narrow margin, with 43.5 twins per 1,000 births.) The tremendous growth in the number of women turning to in vitro fertilization is behind the multiple births, according to Dr. Richard Reindollar, a fertility expert at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.
