How is unexplained infertility treated?
0:00:10.000,0:00:14.000
Dr. Laurence Jacobs, Fertility Centers of Illinois: Numerous studies have shown that by far and away the best treatment
0:00:14.000,0:00:19.000
for unexplained infertility is doing IVF: in vitro fertilization.
0:00:19.000,0:00:24.000
Simply because it's the only method we have where we can look at the egg quality,
0:00:24.000,0:00:30.000
we can look at not only picking out the best sperm, but if necessary place the sperm into the eggs
0:00:30.000,0:00:36.000
by doing ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, so we bypass any concerns about fertilization.
0:00:36.000,0:00:38.000
And, thirdly, we're not using the fallopian tubes.
0:00:38.000,0:00:45.000
So, by being able to make healthy embryos and put in one of two embryos, we get very good pregnancy rates.
0:00:45.000,0:00:52.000
The problem is that many couples either cannot afford IVF or they don't want to start with IVF,
0:00:52.000,0:00:59.000
so we'll do medicated cycles with ovulation induction and we'll do IUI or intra uterine insemination,
0:00:59.000,0:01:04.000
even though it's not nearly as successful as IVF, it's easier to do and it's less costly,
0:01:04.000,0:01:12.000
so there's nothing wrong with starting with that type of therapy, as long as you're limiting it to no more than, say, three or four cycles.
