Dr. Edward Marut: Unfortunately, after the transfer of six, again the pregnancy test was negative.
Kathy: We were devastated. I think we were; I think I was ready to give up, actually.
Eric: We were tired of having negative results, so we wanted a plan in which we knew in a definitive amount of time, we'd have a baby.
So, our last IVF cycle that we attempted, we initiated the adoption process at the exact same time. And she referred to it as a parallel path. Kind of like, basically, after 10 months either through the adoption or the IVF, we'd have a child in our hands.
Dr. Edward Marut: So in the next fresh IVF cycle, we did even better. We changed the protocol, had more eggs than ever, had more embryos than ever.
Eric: I think if I remember correctly, there were two embryos that were kind of iffy and six that were pretty good. And I think it was our plan, in talking to the embryologist before, that we would be only transferring six.
And the whole way to the doctor's office that early morning (it was a Saturday morning or a Sunday morning, I think it was) that we decided that, you know what, Kath and Eric, let's put them all in.
And we pleaded our case to the embryologist and they were OK with it, with, of course, the doctor's approval.
Narrator: On their fourth emotional cycle of IVF, and as a last resort beginning adoption procedures as well, Kathy and Eric will have to wait for yet another phone call from their doctor to see if they've succeeded in the art and science of making a baby.
