Today's Video: FSH Testing

Be proactive about your fertility. Ask your doctor to test your FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels multiple times. An FSH test is done on the third day of your menstrual cycle (day 3) to test your ovarian reserve, or the number of eggs you have in your follicles. A higher number indicates a low ovarian reserve.

Well, one thing I would definitely encourage all women to do who are 33, 34, 35 years old, is definitely to get an FSH test. And not just once, but to do it over maybe three consecutive months, because the levels do change; they do fluctuate, and I think that that's something that you need to be aware of. And I also encourage women to really become an advocate of their own reproductive health. I was never, ever talked to about my reproductive health by any of my gynecologists. They never encouraged me to test my FSH. It was never, ever an issue that was addressed. And I really think it's important for women to take control of that if they have any interest in having children in the future. Some things that I think are really important—I would really encourage women who are struggling with infertility or think that there may be a problem--to do is to immediately consult with their gynecologist about their hormone levels. Originally, when I went to see my gynecologist I came back with an FSH level of 7, and so she never thought that this would be a problem. When I tested with my RE, I think my FSH level was 12-13, and that's when we realized that there was a problem. So, there are changes in hormone levels every month, and it's something that you should be aware of.
