Fertility Nurse of the Month: Gladys Lopez, RNC, BSN

Gladys Lopez

Gladys Lopez, RNC, BSN, South Florida Institute of Reproductive Medicine

Gladys Lopez’s nursing career has spanned almost three decades, and 22 years ago she joined Dr. Juergen Eiserman as he founded South Florida Institute of Reproductive Medicine. Today she is the Nurse Manager and IVF Coordinator at the practice. Fertility Authority is pleased to recognize Lopez as Fertility Nurse of the Month for the dedication and care she provides her patients and the practice.

Lopez provides management and oversight for the 14 nurses and 12 medical assistants at South Florida Institute’s Miami office and satellite offices and supervises the egg donation program. She also hires the nursing staff, and says compassion is the number one trait she looks for. “I can teach you IVF,” she says, “but if you don’t have the heart, aren’t into hand holding and taking care of the patient … you’re not going to able to deal with it.”

As IVF coordinator, she works closely with patients: creating IVF calendars, obtaining consents, proving patient education, and performing ultrasounds, intrauterine inseminations (IUIs), and egg retrievals. A little bit of everything, Lopez says. Listening to patients’ concerns, being there for them, understanding where they are coming from, and providing emotional support are critical parts of the fertility nurses’ role. “You know they are going through so much and we are there for them.” she says. As a result, she is available by phone and email 27/7.

Her strong relationships with patients and the practice are apparent. She gets Christmas cards from patients who have had children more than 20 years ago. “They know you are part of their family forever,” she says.

As for her relationship with Dr. Eisermann, she is both extremely fond of him and proud of him, speaking of his accomplishments in growing such a large and successful practice, even though the interview should be focusing on her.

“I love my job,” Lopez says. And she’s passed that love of nursing on. Lopez has been happily married for 27 years, is the mother of three, and her oldest is a NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) nurse.

FertilityAuthority congratulates Lopez on being honored as Fertility Nurse of the Month.
