Fertility Nurse of the Month: Jill Hendricks, BA, RN
Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey, Morristown, NJ, June 2011
FertilityAuthority is pleased to honor Jill Hendricks, BA, RN, as Fertility Nurse of the Month. Hendricks is a Third Party Nurse Manager at Reproductive Medicine Associates of New Jersey.
At 35-years-old, Hendricks, a former technical recruiter, felt like she was wasting her days in a career that didn’t have a lot of meaning to her, and she entered nursing school.
“I said to my husband, when I started having minor fertility issues, ‘I think [working as a fertility nurse] is an area I could be good at — I think I could help people doing something I’m really interested in and something I enjoy,’” she says.
As a Nurse Manager at the New Jersey fertility clinic, Hendricks is in charge of the third party team — the egg donation, embryo donation, and surrogacy/gestational carrier programs. While this role carries administrative responsibilities, the bulk of her day is fertility patient care.
This includes consultations with donor egg recipients who are just getting started with third party reproduction, setting up cycles, matching recipients with egg donors, and related care and support.
“When patients get to third party, they’re here for a really good reason,” Hendricks says. “Either they’ve had medical issues, or they can’t get pregnant. By the time they get to third party we’re their last step. Some of these patients come to us so desperate, thinking maybe they don’t have a chance to get pregnant, and to have them matched with a donor they love, or matched with embryos they love and to see them get pregnant, that makes my day.
The worst part of her day? When patients don’t get pregnant. “My biggest pet peeve — because of my patient population — is that movie stars at 47 get pregnant, and my patient comes in and she cries with me for an hour. ‘Well I’m only 45, why can’t I?’ It’s terrible, and it’s so sad.
“Hopefully we can start getting the news out there that women cannot get pregnant when they’re 45 with their own eggs,” Hendricks says, while spreading the news that there are other options.
“It’s a field that’s always growing, always changing; there’s always new technology coming out, new things that we can offer our patients,” Hendricks says.
Hendricks' interest and enthusiasm for her work, her team, and her patients at RMA NJ is obvious. FertilityAuthority congratulates Jill Hendricks on being recognized as Nurse of the Month.
