Fertility Nurse of the Month: Joanna E. McCall, RN, BS

Carolinas Medical Center Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Charlotte, NC, August 2011

FertilityAuthority is pleased to honor Joanna E. McCall, RN, BS, as Fertility Nurse of the Month. McCall is the IVF/Egg Donor Coordinator at Carolinas Medical Center Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in Charlotte, NC.

The Path to Fertility Nursing

A graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland, McCall holds a BS in Health Science (Magna Cum Laude) and began her career in health care in 2001 as a medical assistant at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital’s Women’s Health Clinic in Cooperstown, NY. In 2003, she entered Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2005 and took on the role of Nursing Supervisor at Bassett Hospital.

"I was an infertility patient before I became an infertility nurse," says McCall, who battled infertility for 10 years. "I began my nursing career in an OB/Gyn outpatient setting. My personal experience with infertility drew me to this area of nursing practice."

McCall and her husband relocated to Charlotte in September 2007, and she began her work as IVF/Egg Donor Coordinator at CMC Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She also found success in building her family — through in vitro fertilization (IVF); she and her husband are the proud parents of a 2-year-old son.

A Typical Day

In her position as an IVF/Egg Donor Coordinator, McCall coordinates IVF cycles and egg donor cycles for two of the reproductive endocrinologists at thefertility clinic. "On a daily basis, I am involved in patient intake, coordination of ovulation induction cycles, as well as performing intrauterine inseminations," she explains.

McCall starts each day at 6:45 am. "All patient monitoring ultrasounds and blood work appointments are between 6:30 and 8 a.m.," she says. "I assist in patient flow during this morning time, answering questions, coordinating medications and appointments. After 8 a.m. we begin fielding patient phone calls, as well as assisting the physicians in patient procedures.

"Most days are full of patient calls and coordination of care," she continues, an aspect of her position at which she excels, according to her patients.

Easing Patients' Fears

One of McCall's fertility patients says McCall is instrumental in easing her fears. She wrote in her Fertility Nurse of the Month nomination form:

"Being a complete worrywart, I seem to constantly bug Joanna with endless questions and issues. She has gone out of her way to reassure me and help reduce my overall stress. From helping me with my intramuscular HCG shot to pouring over my files with me to look at my test results together for a second or third time, Joanna does not hesitate to help me allay my fears."

McCall's own experiences with infertility give her more empathy for her patients. "I feel that having experienced most of what my patients experience makes me better at what I do," she says. "I can give a personal touch that not all REI nurses can."

McCall finds the most job satisfaction in being a resource and guide for patients who are navigating a complicated and stressful world of infertility treatments. "The absolute best part of my job is the satisfaction of answering patients’ questions and helping them navigate the infertility testing and treatment process," she says. "I enjoy working with infertility patients even when their outlook is bleak. Far and away, positive outcomes help me to continue this work day after day. Even when outcomes are not positive, I can walk along side my patient with compassion and empathy."

McCall's empathy and compassion for her patients are apparent in her work as an IVF/Egg Donor Coordinator. FertilityAuthority congratulates Joanna E. McCall on being recognized as Fertility Nurse of the Month.
