Infertility Insurance Coverage in Syracuse
The fertility treatment process can be a trying journey—emotionally, physically, and financially. The costs can add up quickly, especially since more than one course of treatment or in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle is often necessary.
Currently, around 15 states have a mandate in place that requires insurance companies to either offer coverage or provide coverage for infertility treatments. Luckily for Syracuse residents, New York is one of the states that requires insurance companies to offer infertility insurance coverage.
This law is clarified in Article 32 of the New York Insurance Law. According to this law, insurance companies cannot exclude coverage for care that would otherwise be covered by the policy just because the medical condition results in infertility. The law was amended in 2002. This amendment requires insurance policies to provide coverage for women between the ages of 21 and 44 seeking infertility treatment. However, it does not cover IVF, gamete intrafallopian tube transfers, or zygote intrafallopian tube transfers.
New York residents are also eligible for grants of IVF. More information is available by contacting the New York State Department of Health.
Even with this infertility insurance mandate in place, it is still a good idea to talk directly with a representative of your insurance plan so you can find out what exactly will be covered.
