Los Angeles, CA Insurance Coverage
Infertility treatments can be very expensive, and many couples can't afford treatment without health insurance coverage. Residents of Los Angeles are in luck, because California is one of 15 states with a mandate to cover infertility treatment.
California Health and Safety Code, Section 1374.55 states that insurance plans must offer coverage for infertility treatment and diagnosis. Health insurance plans that cover hospital stays and medical and surgical expenses are required to offer insurance coverage. However, employers are not forced to include the infertility coverage in the plans, nor are they required to provide the coverage.
In order for a condition to be defined as infertility, it must be diagnosed by a doctor. The woman must be unable to conceive a child or carry a pregnancy to term after trying to conceive for one year.
The mandate covers infertility treatments, diagnostic tests, medication, surgery, and GIFT. However, it does not cover IVF treatments.
Before you begin your treatment, it is recommended that you talk with your insurance provider to determine what exactly will be covered.
