Nurse of the Month: Jennifer Machovina, RN, BSN
Director, Donor Egg and Gestational Carrier Programs, Genetics & IVF Institute, October 2010
FertilityAuthority is pleased to honor Jennifer (“Jenn”) Machovina as Nurse of the Month. Nominated by patients with whom she has worked in the donor egg program at Genetics & IVF Institute in Fairfax, VA, Machovina speaks passionately about her role, and warmly about her patients. As the Director of the Donor Egg Program, she says she “rides the roller coaster on the journey with patients.” "I cry with patients who haven’t been able to have a successful cycle” and she celebrates those who do.
Many patients Machovina works with have been unsuccessful with IVF, and are at first reluctant to consider donor egg. “I watch their transformation to acceptance,” she says. “I get to show them that [having a baby] is a possibility. I can help them start their families.” Machovina guides them through the donor egg cycle: what to expect, timing, counseling and choosing a donor. “We’re going to make it as easy as possible for the patient,” she says. To that end, she’s always available for his patients via phone or email.
“Third party reproduction - it’s not so mainstream,” she adds. “People are afraid to talk about it. We’re their outlet – we’re putting them back in control of [their situation].”
Machovina describes her days as “busy,” “harried,” and “hectic.” But she is also quick to add the following: “[The staff] constantly reminds each other we’re changing people’s lives. It helps you get up in the morning and keeps you going.”
