Paying for Fertility Treatment in Brooklyn
Many infertility patients cite financial concerns as a source of stress for them. And that’s no surprise—fertility treatments can be costly!
In fact, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the average cost for one cycle of IVF is $12,400, a cost that can grow when you consider more than one cycle is often necessary.
Infertility Insurance in New York
In order to defray some of the costs associated with fertility treatments, many people turn to their insurance coverage.
Currently, there are only 15 states that have an infertility insurance mandate in place that require insurers to either offer coverage or to provide coverage. Thankfully for Brooklyn residents, New York is one of these states.
According to New York law, the mandate applies to patients 21 to 44 years old who have been covered by their policy for at least one year. Group policies must provide diagnostic tests and procedures that include hysterosalpingogram, hysteroscopy, endometrial biopsy, laparoscopy, testis biopsy, semen analysis, blood tests, and ultrasound. And if the policy provides coverage for prescription drugs, they must also cover FDA-approved drugs used to treat infertility.
However, this law excludes coverage for IVF, GIFT, and ZIFT, reversal of elective sterilization, and experimental medical or surgical procedures.
Other Ways to Pay for Treatment
In order to supplement insurance coverage, many patients turn to personal or private loans, signing up for medical credit cards, or borrowing money from friends or family members.
