Using an Egg Donor in Los Angeles

Older women undergoing in vitro fertilization tend to produce eggs that form embryos that are less likely to implant and more likely to result in miscarriage. This is why IVF with donor eggs is much more common among older women than among younger women. Eggs produced by women in older age groups form embryos that are less likely to implant and more likely to result in miscarriage if they do implant. In 2009, donor eggs or embryos were used in approximately 12 percent of all assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles in the United States, according to information from the Centers for Disease Control and Reproduction.

Data listed in the latest Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Report includes information on the number of donor egg IVF cycles performed in the entire state of California. Information is also available specific to the Los Angeles area clinics, and includes fresh and frozen donor egg cycles.

Known Egg Donors and Anonymous Egg Donors

If you are considering using an egg donor, you have two options. You can use a known egg donor, which is someone you or your partner know personally, such as a friend or a relative. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, you can use an anonymous egg donor. An anonymous egg donor goes through the egg donation process without having her identity revealed. Usually, anonymous egg donors are matched with potential parents through an egg donor agency.

Marc Kalan, M.D, of The Center for Fertility and Gynecology in Los Angeles says a number of factors play into what makes an egg donor a good match for potential parents. "In a large metropolitan area, like here in Los Angeles, patients have the luxury of a multitude of potential donors to choose from. In making their decision, patients should consider some qualities beyond the obvious of appearance, medical history, and intelligence. A good donor will also be reliable, stable and responsible. Remember, if the donor does not show up for appointments and take her medications on time, for example, her good looks and high IQ will not be enough to result in a pregnancy". The egg donor that you select will likely be matched to you based on your preferences for these factors. You may select a donor of similar ethnic origin, or one whose features resemble your or your partner's features.

Egg Donor Agencies and Clinics

If you decide to use an anonymous egg donor, your next step may be choosing an egg donor agency. Egg donor agencies can match you with an egg donor, who you may be able to choose based on certain characteristics, such as ethnicity or even educational level.

Because egg donor agencies are not formally licensed, it is important to do your research carefully. Visit the agency and ask some questions beforehand. Important topics include how long the agency has been in operation, what kind of physical and emotional screening they require of their donors, and the limitations on the number of times a woman can donate.

There are a number of egg donor agencies in Los Angles. Some specialize in working with homosexual couples.
