Known and Anonymous Egg Donors
There are two kinds of egg donors, known and anonymous. Known egg donors are women you know personally like family members, friends, or a woman you meet through an egg donor agency. Anonymous egg donors decide to donate their eggs but prefer to keep their identities private. They generally donate through infertility clinics or by using lawyers. Whichever donor type you select, it is very important each donor has a thorough medical, psychological, and drug and alcohol screening. Medical screenings should also include an examination of both genetic and sexually transmitted diseases.
Egg Donor Agencies and Clinics
Selecting an egg donor should be done carefully. Many women want to work with an agency to find an egg donor. Currently there are no laws in place that regulate egg donor agency licensure. Because of this there are no mandatory practice regulations. Agencies can decide to work with local doctors or staff from another state. Some donor agencies use donors from other countries. Each agency creates its own screening and age requirements when selecting their donors.
Many people choose to work with donor agencies because they act as mediators between the donor, fertility clinic, and prospective parent. When working with a donor agency find out how long they have been in business, what donor screening is done, and their requirements regarding the frequency of donation for their donors.
Some egg donors collaborate with an agency that finds donors and others work directly with the fertility clinics. These clinic programs offer complete fertility treatment including donor screening, treatment, and ongoing testing and monitoring all done in one location. Many women like the comfort and familiarity of working in one place with the same group of fertility professionals.
The southern New Jersey area has many established egg donor programs. They include the following:
- Cooper Institute for Hormonal Disorders
- Louis Manara, MD
- South Jersey Fertility Center
- Princeton IVF, Delaware Valley Infertility OB/GYN Group
- Shore IVF and Reproductive Medicine
- A Woman’s Gift
Closely review protocols and procedures of the egg donor program you select. You need to clearly understand their donor screening and admission procedures. Select the fertility program that feels like the best fit for you.
