Westchester County Infertility Insurance Coverage
Fertility treatment costs can accumulate quickly, especially since more than one course of fertility drugs or cycle of IVF may be needed. As a way to shoulder some of the costs, many Couples turn to their insurance companies for coverage.
Only 15 states currently have state mandates in place that require insurance plans to offer coverage or provide coverage for fertility services. Thankfully for Westchester County residents, New York is one of the states that has an infertility insurance mandate in place.
New York Infertility Insurance Mandate
The infertility insurance mandate is found in Article 32 of New York Insurance Law. According to this law, health policies cannot exclude coverage for care that would otherwise be covered, just because the medical condition results in infertility. The law was amended in 2002 to require certain insurers to cover fertility treatment for women between the ages of 21 and 44 years old. However, there are certain exemptions to this law, including IVF, gamete intrafallopian tube transfers, and zygote intrafallopian tube transfers.
New York also has a program for eligible residents that provides grants for IVF. For more information, please contact the New York State Department of Health.
Even with this infertility insurance mandate in place, it is still important to talk with a representative from your health insurance plan before you begin treatment. In doing so, you will learn exactly what will be covered and at what amounts.
