Egg Freezing

A blog by Neway Fertility, October 7, 2014

Some fertility clinics expect to see a 50% increase in egg freezing patients in 2014, but why?

Technological and procedural innovations have boosted the success rate of egg freezing, and these improvements have opened the door for patients to seek this service for different reasons.

The technology to freeze eggs has taken some time to develop, because, when the egg is frozen, ice crystals can form and destroy the integrity of the cell. However, in recent years, a new flash-freezing process known as vitrification has been developed.

This technique has proven to be superior to the earlier method used and currently pregnancy rates from cryopreserved oocytes are very good.

In 2012, the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) removed the “experimental” label from the procedure saying, “Oocyte cryopreservation is an exciting and improving technology, and should no longer be considered experimental. Pregnancy rates and health outcomes of the resulting children are now comparable to those of IVF with fresh eggs.”

Egg freezing has been long used as an option for cancer patients to preserve their eggs if they face treatments that cause sterility, like chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

However, the practice of freezing eggs has been getting more popular among women looking to free themselves from the restraints of biology.

If a young professional freezes her eggs early on, she may have flexibility. If she reaches a crucial phase of her career in her mid to late thirties, but still hasn’t had a child, she will have the option to push back starting a family.

An even more popular reason to bank eggs is the lack of a significant other. If a 30-something bachelorette doesn’t have any promising prospects, she doesn’t have to settle to start a family. Instead, she can freeze her eggs and wait until she meets the right person to settle down with.

Banking eggs for these and other personal reasons creates a sense of empowerment for many women, as seen in the census data displayed to the right. Women don’t have to sacrifice their career or rush finding the perfect partner in order to start a family anymore.
