What got you started blogging?
It was a nagging sense "otherness" that drove me into the blogosphere. It had been a couple of years since my husband and I made the decision to stop infertility treatment but I realized that the decision to end active intervention had little to do with arresting the emotional trauma. It wasn't long before I began to fully appreciate that we need to treated our heart and soul as much as our bodies around the myriad issues and challenges associated with infertility.
What has been the most surprising thing about having a blog?
The global response! The first comment I ever received came from Australia, followed soon after from Singapore, the UK, Canada, South Africa and many states across America. That's just the beginning. Some of the most touching comments I've received have come -- sometimes in broken English -- from India, Africa, Croatia, Brazil and Slovenia. The hunger to be understand and validated is universal -- across culture, age and geography. There's so much work to be done to raise awareness about infertility that goes far beyond the superficial coverage we see in mainstream media.
What do you hope to accomplish with your blog?
A sea change in awareness and recognition about the ways -- ordinary and extraordinary -- that infertility can turn our lives inside out, upside down! Far too often the societal response is to mitigate and reach for platitudes. A little empathy goes a long way. I hope that Coming2Terms has proven that.
What’s your favorite story about being part of the blogging community?
It's truly the global community I've helped to foster and to take part in. There is tremendous power and satisfaction in knowing that you can help someone from your kitchen table. The ability to touch someone in the middle of the night or whenever they come to visit Coming2Terms warms my heart.
What topics do you cover on your blog? Or how would you describe your blog?
When I first sat down to create Coming2Terms I was propelled by the mission of revealing what it means to live with infertility in a fertile world. There are lots of blogs chronicling the physical aspects of infertility -- how to administer a hormone shot with as little pain as possible; what to expect with your first "egg harvest"; the path from certain basics meds to the blow by blow description/monitoring of ICSI IVF -- what I wanted to cover were the societal challenges, the stigma surrounding infertility and the inherent obstacles that come with rebuilding a life that you hadn't ever anticipated. I don't think I could have come up with a better name for my blog than Coming2Terms.
