Real Housewives Star Admits to Infertility and Miscarriage
a blog by Claire, October 17, 2012
She writes in her Bravo TV blog: "Watching this episode and discussing it with my husband was especially hard for me and at times painful to watch. The fertility issues that we have had to deal with over the last several years have been trying and reminders, like this episode, are tough". Many couples who have experienced infertility and loss can relate. There is often a sense of blame and failure to fulfill the "all-important" social role of becoming a parent.
Hochstein admits that she and her husband, Lenny, have struggled with infertility for 3 years, and while she knows many other couples are fighting to build their families, the star says infertility is not something she expected would happen to her.
“We never thought that starting a family would be so difficult, and we were really unprepared for this journey. We never thought that we would need to seek the help of a fertility expert of some of the other treatments that we have done in the hopes of making our dream a family a reality. During our ordeal, many of our friends have casually asked us innocently enough, ‘So when are you going to start a family?’ They were just being nice, but every time I heard it, I cringed, because I just did not want to be reminded. Many had theories, like I was too small or too thin, and although I know it was not said maliciously, it made me feel self-conscious nonetheless”, states Hochstein.
The truth is, infertility affects 1 in 8 couples- regardless of fame, fortune, age, and ethnicity. Though many celebrities keep their infertility private, it is a refreshing change when a TV personality is open about their experiences. There is often a misconception that women will continue to be fertile into their late 40's because the faces we see in the media portray their pregnancies as natural and unassisted. The team at FertilityAuthority.com applauds Lisa for going public!
Lisa Hochstein joins Real Housewives Jacqueline Laurita (RHONJ), Bethenny Frankel (RHONY), and LuAnn de Lesseps (RHONYC) in the ranks of TV faces battling infertility.
