Roll Out the Red for Fertility
That splash of color — a touch of red lipstick, a sexy red dress — is always a mood lifter. Could it be a fertility-enhancer too — at least in men's minds?
A 2008 study by University of Rochester scientist Andrew Elliott demonstrated that men perceive women in red to be more attractive and sexually desirable than those wearing other colors. Now, the scientist and his team find that men think that women wearing red are more interested in sex.
The researchers showed men a photo of a single woman, wearing either a red or white T-shirt. The t-shirt color was altered in photoshop. The men were then asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 9 if the woman was "interested in sex." Interestingly, women wearing red were scored 1.5 points higher on average.
Essentially the study found that men perceive women in red as sexually receptive. The theory is that men are evolutionarily conditioned to associate the color red with fertility. The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.
The researchers say women should be cautious in their use of red, especially if they don't want unwanted attention. But we say, if you're trying to get pregnant, go for the gusto. Take your cue from Scarlett O'Hara when she showed up at Ashley's birthday party in Gone With the Wind.. Haul out your sexiest red dress, paint your nails, touch up the cheeks and lips.
And maybe men's thoughts about fertility will become your reality!
