The Kardashians Talk Fertility and Freezing Eggs
a blog by Claire, September 12, 2012
The Kardashian sisters are shining the spotlight on infertility and egg freezing.
In Sunday's episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, 31-year-old Kim accompanied 28-year-old Khloe to a fertility clinic appointment for ultrasounds and blood work. Khloe is investigating why she is having trouble getting pregnant with husband Lamar Odum. For more than a year, there have been reports of Khloe's frustrations at trying to have a family, and in June it was reported that she had begun fertility treatment.
In a show of sisterly support, Kim had the battery of fertility tests, too, and began to explore the possibility of freezing her eggs for future use. Kim is of the ideal age to do this — many women wait until their late 30s, which fertility doctors say may be too late. A woman’s egg quality is at its peak between 16 to 28 years old and is still acceptable from age 29 to 38, but the quality diminishes from age 39 to 44.
At the fertility doctor appointment, the younger Khloe, found out that she hadn't ovulated that month. Now there are reports that her husband has asked her to stop filming her fertility visits because he thinks it is too stressful for her and is having an impact on her ability to get pregnant.
If they choose, Khloe and Lamar should be able to keep their infertility struggles private. But Khloe and Kim do have a huge opportunity to educate many on infertility, its treatments and preserving fertility for the future. Keeping Up with the Kardashians was Sunday's top cable program, with more than 3 million viewers. And on Twitter @KhloeKardashian has more than 7.5 million followers, while @KimKardashian has more than 16 million. That's a large platform from which to speak.
