Is Chelsea Clinton Preparing for IVF Twins?

a blog by Claire, January 8, 2013

According to speculations, former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton and husband Marc Mezvinsky are hoping to make Bill and Hillary grandparents- and not just once, but twice! They're preparing for twins!

Clinton is reportedly concerned about the gravity of her parents’ health conditions (an ongoing heart condition for the former President and a recent blood clot for the Secretary of State) and wants to make them grandparents through in vitro fertilization (IVF). “Chelsea’s ready to give IVF a go and Marc is supporting her decision. They both realize there is a better chance of a multiple birth with this treatment. Chelsea is very concerned with her mother’s life-or-death medical crisis and her father’s concerns about dying. So with luck, a birth announcement is just around the corner!” says a source.

IVF is a treatment for infertility conditions that bypasses ovulation and promotes optimal conditions for egg fertilization. Once an embryo is grown in the lab, it can be transferred back into the uterus. Current medical guidelines are suggesting single embryo transfers are safer than double embryo transfers, which increase the risk of a multiples pregnancy and any associated pregnancy complications. Our hunch is that Chelsea is smart enough to realize IVF isn't a guarantee and twins aren't a novelty.

Clinton admitted in an interview with Vogue last year that her parents (mom especially) can’t wait for their first grandchild- and it is definitely a topic of frequent discussion for the pair. 'It’s certainly something that Marc and I talk a lot about. I always knew I was the center of my parents’ lives when I was growing up. And I am determined that our children feel the same way”, she told the magazine.

Whether or not they are using IVF to get pregnant, Clinton would likely keep those details under wraps. We don't know her personally, but she has never been one for the spotlight.

Wishing a speedy recovery and baby dust to the Clinton and Mezvinsky families!
