Beyonce Knowles Opens Up About Miscarriage

a blog by Claire, February 1, 2013

When you’re a celebrity, it seems everyone is dying to know the status of your uterus. Paparazzi find ways to take a picture of your baby bump- real or non-existent, and just because you feel like having a caffeine-free soda, it obviously means you’re with child.

Beyonce Knowles and rapper hubby, Jay-Z, are no strangers to the pregnancy rumor mill, but what’s most interesting is that Knowles was able to keep her pregnancy and miscarriage (before Blue Ivy) a secret.

In her latest documentary, Life Is But a Dream , the singer confirms what Jay’s lyrics have already suggested. His track, “Glory”, released shortly after Blue Ivy’s birth revealed a rather personal detail from the couple’s otherwise private life: “Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you’d disappear/But nah baby you magic.”

Knowles addressed her early pregnancy loss, stating: "About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time. And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life.” The pregnancy ended shortly after when a follow-up ultrasound could no longer find a heartbeat. "I flew back to New York to get my check-up - and no heartbeat. Literally the week before I went to the doctor, everything was fine, but there was no heartbeat," she revealed.

The singer took to her recording studio during what she describes as "the saddest thing [she] had ever been through" and recorded the first song she wrote for her album. The track was therapeutic for her.

Knowles later announced her pregnancy with Blu Ivy on stage at the 2011 MTV Music Awards and says the pregnancy experience was “very much like falling in love…so of course you want to scream it out and tell everyone.”
