Quadruplets Born in Utah

A Utah father of recently born quadruplets -- three girls and a boy -- said the babies are "big and healthy." The naturally conceived quadruplets were born Saturday by Caesarean section at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah, the Salt Lake City Deseret News reported.

Family Prepares for Quadruplets, Conceived without Fertility Treatment

Anthony Consolo and his wife, Natalie, without the help of any fertility treatment, conceived quadruplets. Natalie Consolo said she noticed some spotting early on and feared she was having a miscarriage. Instead, the trip to the emergency room revealed that their family of three, including daughter Dorothy, 22 months, would soon become a family of seven. The chance of conceiving quadruplets is 1 in 500,000. Ninety percent of those who do conceive quadruplets do so with the assistance of medical technology.

Utah Mother Fighting Social Security Administration May Set Court Precedent

A child conceived after his father's death. Should his mother have a legal right to Social Security benefits? One Utah woman says yes and is taking her case to the Utah Supreme Court. Gayle Burns gave birth to a baby boy through in-vitro fertilization after her husband Michael died. She says Michael paid into the social security system, and their child has the right to his survivor benefits.

First Time Pregnancies to Be Studied

As part of a national study, Utah researchers are seeking 2,000 first-time expectant women to help them understand the underlying mechanisms in premature births, pre-eclampsia (maternal high blood pressure), fetal growth restriction and stillbirths. The goal is to develop laboratory tests that would detect biomarkers in urine or blood that would identify women at risk.

How is Male Fertility Tested?

In addition to a physical exam and medical history, there will be sperm analysis. Advanced testing for male infertility may include blood tests or testicular biopsy.
