Symptoms of Fibroids and Polyps

Status message

Active context: desktop

Most fibroids are harmless, and many women never experience any symptoms from them. It is important that women visit their doctor for a proper diagnosis of fibroids.

If symptoms do occur, they may include:

Abnormal bleeding:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), sometimes with the passage of a blood clot
  • Very prolonged bleeding with periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Spotting before or after periods

  • Pelvic cramping or pain with periods
  • Lower back pain
  • Pressure or a sense of fullness in the lower abdomen, gas
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Pain or difficulty with bowel movements

Reproductive problems:

Urinary problems:

  • Urinating often
  • Leaking urine

Contact your health care provider if you notice changes in your usual menstrual pattern such as bleeding between periods, increased cramping, a heavier flow, or if you develop a feeling of fullness or heaviness in your lower abdomen. Your health care provider will prescribe appropriate fibroid treatment.

Most polyps are so small they often do not cause any symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they usually include:

Abnormal bleeding:

  • Abnormally heavy periods
  • Inconsistent periods (the length and heaviness is unpredictable)
  • Bleeding in between periods
  • Spotting after intercourse
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding after douching, intercourse, or between periods

White or yellow mucus:

  • Vaginal discharge due to infection

Reproductive Problems:

  • Infertility

Contact your health care provider if you notice a change in your usual menstrual pattern such as abnormally heavy periods or abnormal bleeding or discharge from the vagina. You health care provider will prescribe an appropriate treatment for polyps.

I was adopted at birth and have just discovered that both my mother and aunt had hysterectomy due to cancer and that my grandmother lost her life to it. My womb has done it's job I've no longer any use for it. Just hoping can convince the specialist to do a hysterectomy.

I just had an ultrasound and found out that I have endometrial polyp about 0.6*0.4 .I am 29 and trying to get pregnant. I am scared and worried.I am really scared Cancer: (

Thanks Jenna...I just want to make sure that nothing is serious. And I shouldn't be worried about doctor is on leave he will be back on the 6 I just want to get rid of this polyp and want to be pregnant.

Thank you so much Jenna.. I just want to make sure that is this a alarming thing or nothing to be worried about it.

I am 33 years my doctor finds polyp in my uterus after pelvic organs scan i m still spotting blood during urination so shall i have sex intercourse or not.

Hi there,

You should consult your doctor right away.

Hey, i was diagnosed endometrial polyps about 1.2x0.4 cm and 2.3 x 2.5 subserosal fundal fibroid, the doctor said it wasnt alarming but i really wanted to have a baby, can i also inject HPV vaccine while the polyps is still there.

Hi Rowena,

You should be able to get the HPV vaccine regardless of the presence of fibroids. However, if you are trying to conceive and are concerned about the fibroid interfering with implantation then you should consult a fertility doctor to have it removed. Give us a call at 1-855-955-BABY (2229) to set up a fertility consultation with a doctor near you.

can I get pregnant with fibroid? I want to have my own babies soon, what's the best thing to do? does the removal of fibroid kill?an so scared of removing it. please reply

It really depends on the location and size of the fibroid. The type of treatment depends on those factors too, as well as the fact that you want to have children. You should see a doctor/surgeon who has experience in treating fibroids. Let me know if you'd like more information. Best, Claire

I have a 12.8 cm by 8 cm fibroid cyst. There is absolutely no discomfort, pain, or troubles associated with this cyst other than I am bleeding profusely. I am currently on a paleo/raw food diet, taking everything herbal/organic to try and stop the bleeding, but to no avail. I detest doctors, hospitals and surgery (which is the only option left for the bleeding). I have researched until I am brain dead. Do you have any recommendations for this? Grasping at straws at this point as need to make a decision yesterday. God bless.

You may detest doctors, but you really should see one asap if you are bleeding profusely. Please keep us posted. Best, Claire

A fibroid can't burst, but it can, as you know, cause pain and discomfort. I would recommend seeing a gynecologist who specializes in fibroids, or - if you are planning on getting pregnant - a reproductive endocrinologist. If you want to get pregnant, treatment for fibroids needs to take that into account. If you'd like more information, let me know. Hello I have just come out of hospital following being admitted with severe pain. I had a scan and was told I have a 10cm fibroid. They put the pain down to PID and sent me home on antibiotics. I can't get it out of my mind and want this 'thing' out if my body. I had a scan 18months prior and it was only 6cm so it's obviously growing. Can they burst? I can't stop thinking of it.

I have PCOS and rarely get periods unless I take Provera, but recently after taking Provera I bled for about 3 days and stopped. My husband and I had intercourse and afterwards I started bleeding heavy again with lots of clots. My doctor told me over the phone to not be sporadic with taking my Provera and to take it every month and my bleeding should regulate. I got back on the Provera and never quit spotting while on it. Now I am bleeding a little heavier being off it for a few days now. I have cramping and small clots and bits of tissue for weeks now. I took a pregnancy test, which was negative. My doctor thinks it is hormonal and said if I am still doing this after another month to come in, but I am wondering if I should go ahead and get a second opinion??

ive been for a ultrasound today cos i was havin irregular bleeding the sonographer said there was something but couldnt tel me and that it was down to my gp i was actually getting worried as im a worrier she said put it this way if i thought it was cancer or something life threatning i would be faxin the report but im not faxin the report she said it could be fybroids or cysts or polyops . i have backache pain in rectum feeling bloated bleeding constant while on depo can someone please reasure me that theres nothing to worry about

I'm so sorry you are having a difficult time. If I were in your shoes, I would definitely see another doctor for a second opinion. Best, Claire.

Ive always had painful periods from the age of 9, but ever since I had tubes tied in 03 theyve been worser and worser.I get sharp pains on my right side like someones stabbin me and im bleeding for 7-10 days and i cramp for 7-10 days before i start. went to the dr, they did ultrasound and found 2 cysts on my right ovary . told me that it wasnt a big deal and gave me birth control meds. I now am hurting and bleeding for the majority of the month, Im bleeding clots after intercourse and im in so much pain. the dr just dismisses me like its not hurting me. Im to the point where im miserable the whole month and i dont know what to do. just wondering if anyone else is dealing with something like this.

Hi I'm 21 years old and I had a miss carriage in December, I had the d&c operation to remove the foetus. However in May '13 I started to get extremely heavy periods and huge clots came out. I had lost so much blood in a matter of days my heamoglobin levels reached 3. I had to then have a blood transfusion. The doctors did a hysteroscopy just to look inside my uterus when I was awake they seen some sort of tissue and assumed the foetus wasnt removed properly so I had another hysteroscopy under GA. I was discharged however two days later the same thing happened again. I had a second blood transfusion and they diagnosed me with merrongina / heavy periods. I was told to take the hormonal tablets Norethisterone for 21 days. After a week I was out with my family and I started bleeding again heavily in public and collapsed. I also suffer servere pains in my uterus and back. They did an MRI scan and it showed I had a submuscol fibroid that's about an inch in size. They are now giving me hormonal prostap injections for 4 months which are gonna make me feel like I'm in menopause. They have also diagnosed me with Endometriosis, swelling of the womb, and polysystic ovaries. I suffer serve pain everyday and the fibroid pushes against my bladder making me need the toilet a lot. Can anyone give me any advice on why they won't remove it instead of me being on 18 tablets a day? Is it because the fibroid is too small? Thanks

I'm so sorry you are in so much pain and discomfort. If I were you, I would see another doctor - a reproductive endocrinologist - for a second opinion. If you'd like more info email us at or call 855-955-2229. Best, Claire

I recently had an ultrasound , and found out that I have a fibroid growing on my uterus. I have been having a lot of stomach bloating and back pain. The pain has gotten worse , should I go back to my doctor or go to the hospital ?

Im 42yrs old and recently found out that I have both fibroids as well as cysts on my ovaries. I haven't had a period since April 2013. I've been to my primary dr. referred to Ob/GYN. The Ob is now sending me to a urologists. Now I don't have a doctrine degree. But I know my body I feel as though all this $$$ Im dishing out to these physicians it will all come down to the fact that these fibroids and cysts are the underlying cause to my pain and discomfort. It has gotten worse over the past few days I feel like my insides are going to fall out and my lower back is on FIRE!!! And my newest symptom NO SEX cause it hurts too much.I've had 2 back surgeries so I know the difference between a herniated disk and SOMETHING ELSE is the problem! I have had fibroids when I was younger and at that point and time the Dr. gave me Lupron Depot which pushed me into somewhat of an early menopause. But low and behold!!! 15 yrs later they are back!! So when I mentioned this to the OB she looked at me as if In had no clue as to what In was talking about. Now don't get me wrong I do respect the medical society. But when I am living in my skin and know my body WHY would it be disregarded? I now will be firing all of the so called experts that I have seen in the past 2 months and search for a physician who can respect that I am a Dr. as well A physician of ME!!! I know how I feel and what I'm not feeling!!! I'm sooo angry CAN YOU TELL?? Who do you trust to truly look out for your best interest, well being??? FRUSTRATED

Hi bunny, You should definitely consult a fertility doctor for a second opinion! Give us a call at 1-855-955-BABY (2229) or email and we will help you connect with a doctor who specializes in fibroid treatment in your area. Best, Kim

What is 'pouring back of sperm' as a symptom of fibroid and how does it relate to infertility? My fiance was diagnosed with fibroid 3yrs ago, but she has not experienced any of the above mentioned symptoms!

Hi Ofoma, I am not familiar with pouring back of sperm, but I can imagine it must be related to the presence of the fibroid within the uterus blocking sperm from reaching the fallopian tubes. I am not a doctor, so of course you should consult your doctor. Best, Kim

I feel like an object's inside my tummy kicking,I ve a continues headache and menstrate at every3weeks severe back ache feel dizzy at the end of long work or a bit difficult task. What do you think the is pls

Hi Khadijah, Have you taken a pregnancy test? You should definitely consult your OB-GYN to find out what could be causing that. Best of luck! Kim

I too am in my late 30's and was told by my Gynae that I have uterine polyps. I am suffering tremendous amount of pain in my lower back, feeling extreme pressure in my lower abdomen. This is very annoying and very stressing when it is constant pain all day every day. I understand what all you women are going thru.

I have the same thing!4 months of pain everyday. I too am very scared. I had a uterine biopsy last week and I'm very worried for the results. I'm 41 and have 3 kids. Most of what I've read says polyps don't cause pain but I think they are full of bull.

HI, I wanted to say I had polyps in my mid 30's and always had very heavy , many clots, extreme cramps and very long periods. I had about 8 or 9 cervical polyps removed. CAUTION: if done in the office I advise you ask what kind of pain relief to take BEFORE. BUT if it's just 1 or 2 polyps don't worry. For me they thought it was ONE HUGE POLYP and it was with many other smaller ones discovered after removing the huge one. I have a high threshold for pain but that many removed well let's say I wouldn't want to do that again.

for me though, polyps was just the beginning, I went to having my period every 2 weeks then every week and finally every 20 days out the month for over a year. Next I had an endrometrial ablation which is the removal of the uterine lining which worked for 1.5yrs. You don't bleed during menstruation and/or only spot. BUT for me i went back to the same problem with Severe Pain now.

I had an emergency laprascopy which due to endrometriosis had caused problems and my fallopian tubes were attached to my intestines and had lesions on top of them. THIS procedure left me pain free, having normal periods meaning usually once a month and I only spot for 3 or 4 days.

IF you have polyps get them removed as why not play it safe! for some this is the solution but for me well "female" problems are numerous. So many of you won't go through what I did. BUT I still say get cervical polyps removed.

i am 51 years old and have polpys on a fibroid ive got to get them removed but my blood pressure is very high and not going down as quickly as they want if it takes a few month to get my blood pressure right and lose a bit of weight what will happen in the mean time if im still losing fresh blood x

I'm 32 yrs old have had to baby's 4 1/2 and 3 1/2 yrs old now. ever since my last child my body down there has changed. Heavy periods, have to pee more often, painful to have sex sometimes, leaking urine and blood clots would have 1 or 2 per period but more often and larger. and was told I have a tipped uterus. what do you think.

please am over 33years and i am seeing blood in between my period and i had a scan done and i was told i had a fibroid seedling in me and also another test says i have a cervical polyp.please explain what it means and the treatment to use.most time when i do make love to my husband, the sperm seems to pour out if i don't raise my leg up. even though am not on any family planning, have not conceived after 3 years of having my first not sure if its because of all the symptoms but please explain in plain terms. thanks.
From Suazzy..

well i just got off me period five days ago and now today i wake up and im bleeding and cramping. I am freaking out I dont know what to do please someone help me

I've been having problems with pain in my uterus each month. Sharp pains that have sometimes caused me to double over. I have had a two different ultrasound test and they both revealed fibroids. My doctor say that they will go away but they haven't. She has suggested that I have an ablasion. What good would that do and what is the best method of having them removed?

Hi I've been having very heavy periods for a few years I'm also enemic me and my husband have been trying two get pregnant for 11 months now and no luck we have two boys already aged 7 and 11 please help

I have been recently told by my doctor that I have polyps which has been causing me to bleed and cramp after I have had my period. I have been a mess thinking all about cancer. I have two kids, 4 1/2 and 2 1/2 and not getting along with husband at all and who hasnt been a bit caring at all with this since we havent been getting along. Nonetheless I turned to webmd and found these entries from all of you which makes me feel kind of (and I mean kind of) better that I am not alone. I had tried (3 times) to make an appointment (as the sono tech keeps canceling the appointments because she is not going to be in.... DONT ASK, I think I am going to look for a new doctors office) for a saline solution sono that my doctor suggested I have after having a regular sonogram that in fact confirmed the polyps. I just want them out of my body and for someone to tell me that I am ok and will be ok. So glad I got this off my chest!

yes, I feel the same... mad, my husband the same way, can't believe we are still married, my kids can't stand him either. I've been in pain, the same way feel so much back pain on top of having rods in there, doing massage therapy for a job, and so hurtful when I have gas and can't go, cramping and more. I was just having such headache's, throwing up, high blood pressure and everything... can't have sex which doesnt' help. well I take it one-day at a time. Hate when the new day comes and facing my husband again as he is so mean, always swearing at me and kids. I'm ready to kick him out. Well I don't want to do that as I need support and it'll be to hard right now not till I'm ready.. I think lots of it is from feeling as loosy as I am.. nice know other's feeling the same, didnt know what was wrong with me and the blood coming out. asked doctors they didn't know either until I got a period I haven't had in so long. I'm 48, guess menapause is all most over if they have to remove it all. I was tested for full and 3 yrs. not having a period. good luck. maybe it's your doctor your seeing, try a new one that you can trust and get into right away don't wait the pain is not comforting, I know it's not cant' even sleep lately, I'm constantly on a heating pad.... good luck

I'm 24 days late and my last cycle was lite and old blood not new. The test I took had a faint line and so I took another to be sure and it has no line. I'm iffy about going to the doctor, last time I didn't have a cycle for two months went and seen the doctor he gave me pills to take, that state don't take if preg or trying to become preg. Took them anyways cause he told me too and sure enough had a cycle. Since then it has been regular and befor then it was regular. I'm alright with not having one cause at lease it's better then having a cycle that wont stop and the doctors had to give me two packs of blood. I went to the hospital 3 times befor they took me in and actually did something. I ended up haveing an emergency DNC. I don't like Doctors. All they care about is your money and getting it. They don't care about you. What can do? Where can I go where I can trust people and where can I go to find people who actually give a crap. By the way that hospital is lucky I didn't sue when I really probably should have. Sorry this is long.

Last year I went to the emergency room because of heavy bleeding and the ultrasound revealed an ovarian cyst. I recently had a blood test and I'm definitely going thru the change. I have been having very heavy periods and lower backpain and I also have anemia, my question is are ovarian cyst, the same as having fibroids and if so what are the best treatment options and are these cyst cancerous. My doctor suggested for me to have a D&C is this treament effective, what is the down time for this procedure? are their other more modern treatments and if so what are they?

E. Harris

I am 47 and blood tests determined going thru the big M!
During sex sometimes I have very sharp pains during intercourse. I decided to do my own research and looked with a mirror. I discovered a protruding sac like thing. I got really weak and almost passed out just thinkin about it. Tried to forget but now 5 months later gettin worse and bigger. My doctor told me about 5 yrs. ago that I did have cysts or benign tumors on the vaginal walls but told me unless it interferes not to worry. I am afraid to tell my husband as he worry's about me AND I don't want him to look at me differently when we do have sex. Could these be cancerous and what kind of procedure am I looking at to reduce the size or remove them altogether? I am scared. C.W.
