When you ovulate, a mature egg is released from the ovary and moves into the fallopian tubes, where it is available to be fertilized. If the egg is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus, which has thickened to prepare for fertilization, will be shed through menstruation.

When Does Ovulation Occur?

Ovulation can occur at different times of a woman’s menstrual cycle, depending on the number of days of the woman’s cycle. The average menstrual cycle
is usually between 28 to 32 days. Women with a 28-day menstrual cycle usually ovulate between days 13 to 15, or about two weeks after the start of her period.

What Happens During Ovulation?

During ovulation, an egg is released from your ovary and is ready to be fertilized. An egg is available for fertilization for only 12 to 24 hours. On the other hand, sperm can live in the body for 3 to 5 days, making most women fertile for around 5 to 7 days. This means you can get pregnant from intercourse that occurred either just before or just after ovulation.

Right before ovulation, you will experience a luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. Your
luteinizing hormone is linked to your ovarian hormone production and egg maturation. Within 24 to 36 hours of your LH surge, your mature egg will be released for fertilization. Your egg will dissolve after around 24 hours if the egg is not fertilized.

Signs of Ovulation

There are several physical ovulation signs that may let you know when you are about to ovulate. Your amount of cervical mucus will increase, and its texture will change to a white, slippery consistency, which is key to creating a healthy environment through which sperm can travel.

Your basal body temperature (BBT) will also rise. Before ovulation, your BBT should be lower. After ovulation, your BBT should increase by around 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit. This increase should be maintained for about 14 days.

Other secondary signs of ovulation, which may not occur consistency in all women, can include light spotting, slight cramping, breast tenderness, abdominal bloating, and increased sex drive.

Hi there,

Depending on how long you have been trying to conceive (and combined with the fact that you have had 2 miscarriages), you might consider working with a fertility doctor. Give us a call at 1-855-955-BABY (2229).

You should get tested for pcos poly cystic ovarian sydrome i have it and alot of women who have it are over weight because the body cant have sugar because of insulen resistence but anyway pcos is a hormone imbalance were the women has to much male testoterone levels so u can also be hairyer then most women my eggs dont mature and become cysts in my ovaries eery womes differnt and have different levels of hormoes and different symptoms its worth getting checked out because there is help and support groups and women can get pregnant with pcos

Hi, I'm hoping you could help me. I'm 25 and have pcos the same as you. I have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now and have had fertility treatment but all it has done is cause me to produce cysts instead of ovulate. I have now been revered to IVF. Have you been throught anyof this and have you been sucessful in getting pregnant? Please help.

Hi Emma, I am so sorry you are going through this. Like you, I have PCOS and was told IVF would be the most controlled option for me to produce eggs for retrieval without overstimulating (and best response to fertility drugs). If you are not quite ready for IVF, you might consider injectable fertility drugs which produce better quality and quantity eggs for an IUI cycle. If you are looking to connect with a fertility doctor in your area, give us a call at 1-855-955-BABY (2229) or email Best, Kim

Hi - You really should see a fertility doctor for a consultation. There are other steps you can take, such as using an ovulation predictor kit, charting your basal body temperature, etc., but if you have irregular periods and have been having unprotected sex, it's time to see a fertility doctor. You can use this form to find a fertility doctor in your area.

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg (ovum) from the ovarian follicle. Each menstrual cycle, several ovarian follicles begin to mature and develop under the influence of pituitary hormones. Usually only one follicle develops fully. While the other follicles recede, this dominant follicle produces an egg which will be released and which can be fertilized. The growing follicle secretes increasing amounts of the hormone estrogen. Following peak estrogen production, there is a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH). The LH surge triggers the release of the mature egg from its follicle. This is ovulation.

Im 33 years old and i have 3 kids. I did not have any problems getting pregnant with my kids. For the last 8 months i have had unprotected sex and have not gotten pregnant. Im trying to get pregnant but im not. What do u think the chances are of me getting pregnant? Im concerned because of my age. I want another baby. Please help.

i went to an OB-GYNE and had my ultrasound after being checked the dr. told me i have a low fertility rate.they gave medicines to take but the same old story up now did'nt get pregnant.please help me

I'm sure the stress of your job and the stress of not getting pregnant are a lot to deal with. You really should see a fertility doctor, who can help determine if you are ovulating and why you have had miscarriages. Women over 35 who are having trouble getting pregnant and/or maintaining a pregnancy should see a fertility doctor asap. There's a find a doctor search on every page of FertilityAuthority - and you can search by zip code or city.

Also, is a wonderfully supportive community, where you can connect with other women.

Keep us posted.

I have 1 child who is 14 years now, i was pergnant 3 times after that but couldnt keep my pregnancy. i cant tell when am ovulating, maybe i need to get my tempreture and relax more. Am so stressed at work, could this be one of the reasons i have taken so long. Please help me, am 38 and i realy want to have another child

I am a 32yr woman. my 1st marrage went south because, I couldn't have kids. I have taken fertility drugs.. My Dr said that I don't ovulate. I'm over weight and trying to lose. So far I have lost 15lbs. Is there anything I can do? I have taken progesteron. And my Dr. said that my eggs do not drop. I feel like there is nobody, that can answer my question. Why do my eggs not drop? I have a wonderful husband now. He knows about my problem and is supportive. I keep telling my self to just give up, but when I spend time with my nephew, I get the baby blues.

I have the same problem. Never had regular periods. You need to see a fertility specialist. There are medications that will help you ovulate!

My mom had the same problem and she went on fertility drugs and they were able to have me. She was avle to have my older sister without fertility meds because she was on burth control and birth control forces your body to drop an egg even if you cant naturally. She went off birth control and for the following two months she was still dropping an egg due to lasting effects from bc. I just dont think you should give up. I wouldnt be here today if my mom gave up. I am now 28 and am possibly facing the same issues. Reproductive endo docs are specialists with fertility. I think you should find a specialist. Keep at it. It will happen

Hi ! I also used the ginseng and a period regulating tea and got pregnant after trying with no avail to get pregnant by timing my ovulation for a year. My son is now 12 months me and my husband don't use any type of protection but I am still unable to get pregnant on my own could anyone tell me why this is?

Hi Amy,

I would suggest you see a fertility doctor for a fertility evaluation. Your husband should also have a semen analysis done. Call us at 1-855-955-BABY (2229) if you would like to set up a consultation.
