Diagnosis and Treatment of Fibroids and Polyps

Fibroids are often discovered during a pelvic exam. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor may ask you to have a trans-vaginal or pelvic ultrasound, an MRI, or an endometrial biopsy.

Although there are several ways to treat fibroids, most treatments affect fertility. Hormone therapy, uterine fibroid embolization, and a hysterectomy can treat the symptoms but are not recommended for women planning to get pregnant. Fibroids can grow back (except following a hysterectomy) so you may need to be treated more than once.

The only treatment for women who want to maintain their fertility is a surgical procedure called a myomectomy. This procedure preserves the uterus but removes the fibroids that are causing pain or excessive bleeding. A myomectomy can be performed in a number of ways. The type of myomectomy recommended depends on the type, size and location of your fibroids.

Polyps are also usually found during a pelvic exam. There are several ways to confirm the diagnosis. A type of ultrasound called a sonohysterogram uses sterile water to open the uterine cavity and let the doctor see any polyps that are there. Another type of diagnostic test is a hysterosalpingogram which uses dye to open the uterus. An x-ray then shows if any polyps are in the uterus. A procedure called a hysteroscopy uses a thin telescope-like viewing device to look inside the uterus and confirm the presence of polyps.

If you have polyps, they can be treated during a hysteroscopy. Used not only for diagnosis but also for treatment, a hysteroscope lets the doctor remove the polyps. If the polyps are infected you may have to take an antibiotic after the procedure.

Hi..I have small uterine polyps and my doc said I have to go through D&C.I have high FSH level too .my periods are regular and no spotting before and after periods.what is spotting in between periods?.

Hello Maha,

Thank you for reaching out regarding your concerns. Are you currently trying to conceive or manage your Polyps? If you're not trying to conceive any questions regarding your period and spotting should be directed towards your Gynecologist as he or she can best assist and advise you. If you are trying to conceive it would be in your best interest to contact a Reproductive Endocrinologist (Fertility Specialist) as he or she can assist you regarding your Polyps and high FSH level.

Hi, I am 53 years, for past 90 days I didn't have my periods and i went hospital for check up and they said that I have fibroids which is 1.5 mm.. And now I am having very pain n my both the breasts...when ever I am touching I am having terrible pain... What should I do...

If you are having this kind of pain, you should go to your nearest ER or call your doctor immediately. Most doctors will have an on-call doctor to answer emergency calls.

Good luck,

Hello, I'm 44 yrs old and have not had a period for over five years.  For the past year and a half, I have been passing small to large blood clots every day, numerous times a day.  Sometimes I will go a day or two with only a few clots.  After I pass the clots I bleed very very heavily for a few minutes and then, it's as if nothing happened.  I have gained a substantial amount of weight in my abdomen, I look like I am nine months pregnant and am asked all the time "when are you due".   I have been house bound for the past year because every where I go, I pass clots and bleed everywhere.   My sister & I recently flew to go see our father because he was ill, and it was a fiasco!  I bled on the plane seat, all over our rental car.....I couldn't control the clots.  Last year I seen my gyno, who did an endometrial biopsy but the PA. had a very hard time getting a good sample because my uteris wouldn't open or dialate with medication.  She got a small sample after I was screaming in pain.  It came back negative, they said I had nothing to worry about and it would go away on it's own.  This was last year......I can't get anyone to help me and I can't stand being confined to my house anymore.   It's effecting my life in so many ways!  I am extremely fatigued,  my abdomen is huge and the clots are getting worse.  I've tried using pads but the clots are to big to be absorbed, l can't use tampons because I'm not able to insert them anymore.  I've ruined all of my clothes, stained our couch.....  I can't take this anymore but I don't know who I can go too for help.

Tara, if you have been bleeding and passing clots for over a year you need to consult with your doctor immediately! I would recommend consulting a new Gynecologist for a second opinion since you did not get any answers or guidance from your current doctor. You can find local doctors in your area on our website, by searching your zip code. Please email me at if you need further assistance! Best of luck, Jenna

Darlene, if you have been bleeding for 4 weeks you need to consult with your doctor immediately. Please contact your doctor immediately.

Thank you,

Hello. I'm 44 and have a 2-year old daughter. Two months ago I went to my OBG for regular exams, when the doctor found a fibrosis. A month later I went to surgery and the fibrosis was removed. The material was sent to biopsy and the results was a "benign leiomyoma of bizarre type". The doctor asked a second opinion and the other doctor is not convinced that it is either benign or malign. I wish to get pregnant again, but my doctor said I should go through a hysterectomy ASAP. I would like to know if somebody had a similar diagnosis and what was the treatment, if they could wait a few more months or not. Thank you.

I had an accident at work my back dr ordered a MRI of my pelvis and I got the results today but one thing he said I have a cyst on my ovary but I am 59 years old and have gone though the change . What can that be I'm a little concerned .

This is something could best be answered by a doctor. I would follow up with your OB/GYN and discuss your concerns.

I am sixty and I have a large uterine fibroid. I am scared to death to have surgery and I just stop having periods within the last year and a half. What can I do I have been praying and praying looking for answers

I'm so sorry to hear about your fibroid. I would recommend finding a doctor with experience in treating fibroids to discuss your options. The size and location of the fibroid will determine the treatment. I wish you all the best, Claire

can iud give uterus cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, an IUD may lower the risk. If you have any concerns, you should see a doctor. Best, Claire

Hi I've been suffering from pain everytime I had my menstruation, and I've already gone through surgery to remove my polyps couple of months ago. I don't understand why I still have so much pain after my surgery everytime my menstruation is coming. What do I need to do? I'm really scared of what happening. Please give me an answer. Thank you so much

I'm sorry to hear you are in so much pain. You should really consult with your doctor who did your surgery, and/or your gynecologist. If you don't get an answer, I would suggest a second opinion. Best. Claire

My mom has been having abdominal pain and irregular periods for a few weeks now. She is 47 year-old healthy woman with regular periods. She has done a CT Scan, which lead her doctor to send her to do a sonogram. Now she is being asked to do a Water Ultrasound and Biopsy because it looks like she has fibroids, polyps and is not really clear. I'm scared and worried; any advise on what it can be or if it is serious? Thank you!

Hopefully your mom is going to continue the tests to determine why she is having these symptoms. Encourage her to do so, and hopefully you'll get to the bottom of it, she'll feel better, and alleviate your concerns. All the best, Claire

Hi, I am looking for some possible answers, I have had server pelvic pain over the last month, it can be in the form of crams, a strong downward pain, a constant nagging pain. It seems to be worst when I go to the toilet. My last Trans Vigina ultra sound revealed 13 cysts on one side and 7 on the other with the biggest being 13 mm. The ultra sound also revealed a polyp in my uterus . I am still waiting blood test results and a gyno appointment. I also currently have white discharge. I have had the same sexual partner for the last 5 years so PID appears somewhat unlikely ?( I am assuming this) The GP is quite concerned with the amount of pain, and feels this is not polyp related and as my cyst count from previous ultra sound is much lower ( previously 28 on one side and 30 the other) it also seams unlikely for the pain to be PCOS related. I have been tested for pregancy and urien track infection and both are negative. What could be causing the pain ? And how possible is it the the polyp is cancerous ?

Hi Claire, I am terribly sorry you are going through this. It sounds like you might benefit from a laparoscopy which is more accurate than ultrasound for diagnosing and removing polyps. Are you currently working with a fertility doctor? We can help you connect with reproductive surgeon who specializes in laparoscopy. Give us a call at 1-855-955-BABY (2229) or email Best, Kim

I have rapidly gained 3 and a half stone which wouldnt budge no matter how i dieted or exercised in a very short period of time and i was fobbed off by the doctor. Normally I am very thin and never gain weight so I thought something must be wrong. Then followed 3 years of painful periods which would last 3 weeks at a time, bloated and painful stomach, lower back pain, fatigue, finally got a diagnosis of polyps and fibroids and endometriosis. I have had 3 laparoscopies and still the fibroids and polyps return and still can't get the weight off which is leading me to be severly depressed. A dr suggested waiting till I am menopausal as I am 47. Any suggestions as am desperate to sort this out once and for all and I can't believe women have to go through this for such a long time before anything is done.

I am 46 and had a fibroid & polyp removed and had a D&C . I spotted for a week and then I had a regular period light. But I am still spotting 3 weeks after surgery. I am also on birthcontrol. Should i call my doctor back or is it going to take time?

I have fibroids but I do not want to have a historectomy. Is there another treatment for fibroids that doesn't involve surgery? Is it possible for fibroids to develop to become cancers? Is it cancerous?

hii, i had my hystrscopy dnc done last week . i was diagnosed with an endomterium polyp and chronic cervisitis, for that i had cryosurgery. I bled for 2 days ater my surgery.. but after like 4 days i started experiencing serum with blood...and now i can see tht blood is darker and i still am bleeding..dont knw if its normal or not...or is it my menstrual bleeding..tho im not due till 8th of aug and the bleeding started on 23rd of july....and my discharge have any odour...theres no pain or watsoever..expect for a lil this somehitng alarming?

need help. my dr. told me I have a 4.5 cm uterine fibroid in an unusual spot. She said it is near the cervix and in the wall, and near the bladder. She did lab work and said I'm in menopause, but the fibroid is not shrinking at all, but also not growing anymore. I'm having cramps and spotting or periods every day since May and it's now July. She said because of the unusual spot and the surrounding organs as well as my age (50's ) she recommends a total hysterectomy. What should I do? We tried a medication for 10 days. that only stopped my period for about 2 days.

My daughter was an egg donor three times. The last time was over two years ago. She is 26. She is now married and trying to get pregnant but was having unusual vaginal bleeding. The emergency room found growths on her cervix. they are doing a biopsy later this week to see what she is dealing with.

I was wondering if her treatment protocol for egg donations increased her risk of developing cancer, fibroids or polyps. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light.

Hello I was also an egg donor three times and I'm wondering if that could have contributed to getting two small fibroids and/or having trouble concieving as well. I don't have an answer or solution for you but I wish your daughter the best!

I have a fibroid in the opening of my uterus they are not sure wether I should have ufe. surgery, I might pass it and be in a lot of pain. They say like delivering a small baby. If anyone out there has any info on this let me know. My Dr's have never seen this before and are puzzled and want me to have a hysterectomy This is something I really don't want to do.

Hello I'm 34 yrs old and my husband is 40. We've been together for 14 yrs and still have'nt concieved. I have a daughter from a previous relationship and he has no biological children. I found out I have 2 small fibroids about 2yrs ago and since then I've been trying to find out if that's linked to my inability to concieve, or if my husband may be the reason. We really wanna have another child and the biological clock is ticking. We have no clue of what to do and it's so hard for us right now because we don't have the money to get proper testing to even see if there is a problem, not to mention correct it if there is one. Can anyone help us out, or offer any suggestions please??

I know your pain because I been the same problem.i feel bad for the financial problem..but do the best to have testing first you husband than blood test tell you

i have been putting on wieght fast i put on 50 pounds.I knew something was wrong. No one could help. started bleeding after not having a period for five years and got sharp pains. Saw my doctor and I now think I found what it was. Waiting for tests to come back. it looks like polps or throid.having a biopsy done on my lining of the uterus.I have been dealing with the gaining of weight for years.. they say they can weigh tens of pounds on you. I will feel so much better knowing this is why.

I am 58. A polyp was found and removed during recent cervival exam. Had a hysteroscopy in office and there is more of that same polyp in the uterus. Next D&C to remove the rest. Is that what causes the lining to be thick???

Hello, I have chronic reoccurring uterine polyps. I just had a D&C and hysteroscopy last month and the specialist told me there were so many polyps that they stopped counting. They keep coming back. What do I do to stop them from coming back. Is it hormonal. Should I change my diet? HELP!!! I'm tired of getting this surgery every year.

I am 52 years old. During a routine pelvic exam, the gyno found a polyp on my cervix. He opened my vagina wider to see it more clearly which was extremely painful. He had the nurse go get something while I lay in pain. He removed the polyp but I could not tell if the procedure was painful because I was already having such discomfort. I bled a small amount for a few days. Now about two months have passed and I have been having a white discharge, nonstop. The weird thing is I have not had a period since and I was having one about every 21 days prior to the removal of the polyp (I believe I was ovulating at the time.). Any suggestions as to what happened?

I am also 52 yrs old and recently had what initially was thought a fibroid 3 cms. on my uterus and had been bleeding a lot over the last year. It ended up being a benign tumor not a fibroid. If you are having white discharge I would go to the dr. to make sure you don't have an infection or maybe a yeast infection. I was told being 52, I might not get my period after the surgery which is common.....I did though!

I am 50 years old , last year i had a pelvis ultra sound. I was told that i had a fibroid and the only treatment was a hysterectomy, this year i had a cat-scan and was told that i had five fibroid tumors. I adbomen has grown large and i feel blotted most of the time. I heard that enzymes can cause them to shrink. Is this true?

I am 34 years old, noticed within the last month and half that i am getting heavier in my abdomen. I have had 2 pregnancy tests which came back negative. In the last month i have gained almost 10 pounds. i just had my period which only lasted 2 days and normally it lasts about 4 days. my ultrasound saw a possible polyp about 7 centimetres, i will be seeing a gynacologist, but this is very concerning to me as i dont have any children and i am experiencing some of the symptoms mentioned. is there something else that i may have besides this?

I am 55 years old and post-menapausal. I've had abnormal pap smears for years and the latest treatment I received was cryosurgery. Soon after I started have pain and bleeding after intercourse. My doctor discovered the reason is I now have a pretty large cervical polyp. I no longer have access to this doctor with no health insurance and want to know what affordable options are available to me. I also wonder if the cryosurgery actually caused the polyp.

Hi I am 40 years old I was diagnosed with fibroids 3 yrs ago...I have had 2 miscarriages in the last 2 years..I am still trying to have another baby. I get an transvaginal ultrasound every 6 months but they say the fibroid is calm and there any chance I could have another baby.

I was is your sitiation. I recently had the myosure procedure which took less than 30 minutes. It's removes fibroids or polyps that grow inside your uterus. It's better than a D&C because they see what they are removing. Good luck and I wish you success in getting pregnant.

I'm 28 years old and I was diagnosed with polyps about 2 years ago. I had a D&C to have them removed. Last year, the symptoms came back and I believe they came back. I would love to have children soon. What are some suggestions to get rid of them again and get pregnant soon.

I encourage you to use homeopathic treatments. They work! Do not let your body be put through test after test and then a surgery. Homeopathic is the way to go!

Iam 63 years old. My doctor has been concerned with my case for about a year now. I first visited her with vaginal spotting. Lasted a few days. She gave me a pap and it was normal. 3 months later I had a D/C with a biopsy (normal). 3 months later after an exam she noticed a vaginal mass.
I then had a cat scan and she did a biopsy of the cervix. All test came back normal except that some of my cells were abnormal. Then she sent me to a cancer specialist. After a brief exam he suggested that I needed a Historectomy. My question is if this is a fibroid why can't this be removed without the surgery for historectomy.
