Did you know that you could have an underactive thyroid and not know it? Hypothyroidism is a condition in which your body is not making enough thyroid hormone. It can make you tired and weak, and if it is not treated, it can raise your cholesterol levels and increase your risk of heart attack or stroke.
Hypothyroidism can affect your fertility and harm your baby if you do become pregnant.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism include irregular periods, gaining weight, feeling cold all the time, feeling sluggish or depressed, dry skin, brittle nails, constipation and memory problems. If you are having symptoms such as this, ask your doctor to check your thyroid. Hypothyroidism can be treated with thyroid hormone pills, and you will start to feel better soon!
