It's a New World
A new, simple, non-invasive blood test — Verifi — will soon be available to pregnant women to screen for genetic problems with the fetus, such as Down Syndrome, much earlier in the pregnancy. It's an exciting new development in genetic research — fast and inexpensive gene sequencing instruments have become available that, combined with algorithms to analyze the mother's blood, allow scientists to tell whether a fetus has severe developmental disabilities. This new new test helps alleviate the stress and worry of miscarriage that accompanies the two other common methods of diagnostic prenatal testing: amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS). In addition, it provide families with the needed information much earlier in the pregnancy.
Verifi is just the latest in leading edge technology for genetic testing. Preimplantation genetic testing is a lab technique used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF) to detect known genetic diseases (preimplantation genetic diagnosis, PGD) or chromosomal defects (preimplantation genetic screening, PGS).
