I'm newly married and trying to conceive, but want to make sure my body is in the best shape for pregnancy. Do you have any advice on how I can boost my fertility and optimize my body's ability to carry and recover from a pregnancy?

You're very smart to consider the role of nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle in preparing your body for pregnancy. From what I've heard from doctors and professionals in the field, the better shape your body is now, the less time it will take for you to conceive and the less recovery time you will need to bounce back post-pregnancy. Here is a list of tips for getting your body baby-ready:

  • Stop taking birth control
  • Quit smoking and recreational drug use; Talk to your doctor about any prescription drugs you may be taking
  • Get a complete physical from your primary care physician
  • Make sure you are up to date on your vaccinations; Get a flu shot if it is flu season
  • Get Your BMI under control; Improve your diet by increasing leafy green vegetable and lean protein intake; decrease consumption of soy and foods injected with hormones
  • Take prenatal vitamins and folic acid supplements
  • Exercise regularly
  • Try to reduce stress
  • Have sex every 2 days to try to get pregnant
