When You Should See a Fertility Doctor

About 10% of couples in the United States have difficulty conceiving. There are four main factors that need to happen in order for a couple to conceive:

  • A woman must be ovulating
  • Her partner must have enough sperm
  • The woman’s fallopian tubes must be open (so the sperm and egg can meet)
  • The timing of intercourse must be around ovulation time

There are many possible issues that may create problems for one or more of these four factors. Even when everything is running perfectly, the odds of a couple getting pregnant are only around 20%. This is why the diagnosis of infertility is usually not made until a couple has had unprotected sex for 12 months without achieving a pregnancy (6 months for women over 35). If you are having concerns or been finding it difficult to conceive, then you should see a fertility doctor for a consult.
