A Quick Overview of Endometriosis

Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of cells (endometrial cells) similar to those that form inside of the uterus, but in a location outside of the uterus.

Two primary symptoms of endometriosis are pain (usually pelvic) and infertility. However, most women who have endometriosis do not have any symptoms at all.

Endometriosis is estimated to affect millions of women in the United States. It is one of the leading causes of pelvic pain and reasons for laparoscopic surgery and hysterectomy in this country.

The only way to definitively diagnose endometriosis is with a laparoscopy.
