Talk to Your Fertility Doctor
Of course, you talk to your fertility doctor — we know you don't sit through your whole appointment in stony silence.
But do you really talk to your doctors? Do you ask questions when they prescribe treatment? Do ask them to explain when you don't understand what's been said? Do you tell them if you don't agree with what they are saying?
Let's take an example. After having a hysterosalpingogram, your fertility doctor tells you that you have a hydrosalpinx that needs to be removed prior to in vitro fertilization (IVF). Would you ask the following questions?
- What, exactly, is a hydrosalpinx? Can you show me a drawing?
- You're recommending surgery? What are the pros and cons of doing surgery?
- After the surgery, what are my chances of success with IVF?
Don't feel timid about asking questions or requesting more information when you're talking to your fertility doctor. Remember, these are important decisions you are making about your body and your reproductive health … the more knowledge and understanding you have, the better off you will be.
