Dear DS: Should I Go Straight to IVF?
I recently met someone (a friend of a friend) who had a baby via IVF. I have been taking Clomid for the last three cycles and am scheduled to try IUI for the first time in a couple of months. When I told her, she advised me to skip everything and go straight to IVF because that’s where my chances for getting pregnant are best. She really got me thinking. Why should I go through all these minor treatments that take time and money if I’m going to end up doing IVF anyway?
Intrigued By the Advice of a Stranger
Who is this person again? The friend of a friend? Is this person a doctor? Better yet, is this person your doctor? It’s really fantastic that she had success with IVF. It’s no wonder she’s extolling the virtues of this procedure over all others. Did you ask her what she tried before signing on for the mother-of-all-fertility-treatments?
Your head is in the right place. You’re curious and weighing your options. You’re obviously budget-minded. All good things.
DS would caution you, however, from taking medical advice from a stranger. It sounds like this person raised good questions for you to ask your doctor. The hardest part about TTC is that you don’t know what will work. Most doctors would recommend simpler, less invasive and less expensive procedures first. IVF is not like the express line at your grocery store.
