Dear Patient Care Advocates: Is There an Affordable Option for Egg Freezing?

Dear Patient Care Advocates:

I am considering freezing my eggs, but the price tag scares me a bit. Where can I find a clinic that will freeze my eggs for less than $10,000 and maybe breaks that sum down into smaller payments? Also, what can I expect during the egg freezing process?

Not Ready for Motherhood

Dear Not Ready,

Girl, we have the solution for you! Have you heard of Fertility Authority’s new product, EggBanxx? We have negotiated major savings on egg freezing with clinics across the country. We can also extend financing to you so paying for your egg freezing is just like paying your cell phone bill!

Egg freezing is similar to the initial steps of IVF. To start off the egg freezing process, you will consult with a fertility doctor. S/he will take a full medical history, blood work, and ultrasound. The doctor will then determine if you are a candidate for egg freezing based on your hormone levels and antral follicle count (AFC). This part of the process involves a small needle for drawing blood and a transvaginal ultrasound to check your AFC.

Once your doctor gives you the “go ahead” for fertility preservation, you will begin a course of low dose stimulation drugs to prime your eggs for retrieval. Fertility drug injections are usually administered with a pen-like syringe and a needle no bigger than your pinky finger nail. Piece of cake!

After about one to two weeks, you will take one final injection to prepare your eggs for retrieval. The egg retrieval process is usually done under sedation and you will not be able to drive home or return to work that day. A transvaginal ultrasound wand with a long thin needle is used to puncture the follicles in your ovaries and suction out one egg from each follicle. You will get a call later that day to discuss how many of those eggs were mature and can be frozen. Your eggs will then be frozen until you are ready to use them.
