What is Embryo Donation?

Embryo donation is an assisted reproductive technology option for many couples having difficulty conceiving. Same sex couples may pursue embryo donation and surrogacy to build their family. Sometimes donor embryos are sought out by heterosexual couples as an alternative to using donor egg or donor sperm and may allow the couple to experience pregnancy and childbirth.

Donor embryos are typically the frozen embryos remaining from another couple’s in vitro fertilization cycle. Rather than discard their unused embryos, the couple has decided to donate the embryos.

Embryo donation is often available at a lower cost than international or domestic child adoption, though there are legal matters to consider before moving forward with embryo donation. Donor embryos are available through agencies and fertility clinics.

If you are considering embryo donation and in need of resources or referrals, contact our Patient Care Advocates at 1-855-955-BABY (2229) or email
