Taiwan Has World's Lowest Fertility Rate
Taiwan's fertility rate dropped to the lowest in the world, 0.9 births per woman, last year because of a range of factors from economics to superstition, authorities say. Fewer couples on the island of 23 million had children last year in part because the global financial crisis worried them about having enough money to care for a newborn, said Liu Lee-fang, head of the Ministry of the Interior's public relations. Last year was also inauspicious for childbirth according to the Chinese zodiac, she said.
