Twins are conceived naturally just 2 percent of the time; for those who get pregnant with fertility treatments, the rate is more than 40 percent. But the human uterus is designed to carry one baby — when it's stuffed with two, any number of things can go wrong, with the odds in favor of the babies being born prematurely and the cost to the health care system rising dramatically. Now, there are mounting efforts to curb the trend and educate patients about the risks of twins.
