Alabama Personhood Bill: Voters May Define the Start of Human Life
Republican State Senator Phil Williams is the sponsor of the Alabama personhood bill SB5 which has been prefiled for the February 2012 Regular Session. When a personhood law was put to a statewide vote in Mississippi, it failed. In an earlier draft of the Alabama personhood bill, personhood was defined as starting at the moment of fertilization.
Critics raised concerns that the bill could outlaw emergency treatment for pregnant women with life threatening complications, certain types of contraception, and fertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilization — if unused embryos are destroyed either on purpose or by accident. Senator Williams says the language "implantation into the womb" was added to the bill as part of a compromise.
