New Mathematical Model Helps Embryologists Select the Best Embryos to Transfer
Perhaps most beneficial to moderate-grade embryos, a new technique developed by investigators at the Universitat Politècnica de València and the Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe allows embryologists to calculate the probability of embryo implantation on the second day after fertilization.
Using an inverted microscope and sophisticated statistical analysis to examine the number of cells and degree of the embryo (symmetry and fragmentation of cells),the prediction is more efficiently calculated than existing implantation prediction models. The study was recently published in the journal Mathematical and Computer Modelling.
Researchers also discovered that the age of the intended mother impacts her chance of becoming pregnant. Calculated on the Embryo Quality Index (EQI), women of advanced maternal age showed decreased chances of getting pregnant, but combined with the embryo grade, gives scientists the most accurate means of predicting success.
