Dr. Kofinas’ first IVF pregnancy

Your rating: 55 1
I was one of Dr. Kofinas’ patients at the Brooklyn Hospital Center when he was getting his program off the ground. Dr. Kofinas was caring, compassionate and very understanding. I would arrive at the office for blood work and/or ultrasounds at 6:00 am and he was already there!!! Everyone worked together and it was a team effort. I got pregnant on my third IVF try and then again 5.5 years later. I have two beautiful sons-one who is almost 25 years old and one who is 19. Dr. Kofinas, you would be so proud!!! My older son is an NYPD officer and my younger son is going to follow in his brotger’s footsteps. Thank you, Dr. Kofinas for making our dreams come true!! We think of you often and pray fir you that you may continue to do good work!! Hope you remember us!!!

All i want to say is that thanks to Doctor George Kofinas and his team and science, and God we were able to have a beautiful, healthy and smart little girl. and now going for baby number 2 at 42. I strongly recommend for women who are struggling with infertility to go for a consultation with Dr. Kofinas and do the treatment with them. They are as good as it gets. At least for me they made miracles!!

Nice staff however, I didn't feel they really treated their patients in a holistic manner, meaning, their wasn't the best coordination of care, hardly saw the same dr , was told kofina in network meanwhile all other drs in practice out of network - I was assigned an OON dr and was told it would be in my best interest-- billing was always a mystery and never made sense - glad to see folks had success there but I wouldn't recommend based on my initial visits ... just felt like I was on my own there.. I went to a center of excellence in NJ and had 10x better experience...

I came to Kofinas Fertility

Your rating: 55 1
I came to Kofinas Fertility Institute after two years of trying to conceive. After my first consultation with Dr. Brezchffa and Dr. Kofinas, I was quickly diagnosed and my autoimmune issues were, for the first time, taken seriously as impeding my ability to get pregnant. Needless to say, I was successful after my first round of IVF! Dr. Kofinas and his team are extremely thorough, caring, and patient. I would highly recommend this practice.

Thank you Dr. George Kofinas and the team for our beautiful baby

I would like to share my great experience at Kofinas Fertility Institute. Thank you to Dr. Kofinas and his team for giving us the greatest miracle of our lives. Two weeks a go I had a beautiful baby boy. I conceived through IVF on the first try. Dr. Kofinas and his team have been nothing but understanding and supportive during this process. They answered all the questions and reassured us that I will get pregnant. We highly recommend this wonderful clinic.

Mixed Reviews

I'm a patient now for four months. The doctors are very nice. The restrooms are consistently a mess. I do not receive sufficient and clear directions on what to do in my cycle, or the timeline of events During monitoring for a week no one informed me of when the IUI would be until the morning before which is not enough time for a husband to be abstinent for 48 hours before They don't let you hang your jacket and bag in exam room before using the restroom and there's no hooks in the bathroom and the countertops are always wet and messy I'm sticking with them since I have faith in these doctors and I really am a fan of each of them, however I write this review in hopes that they enhance their facilities, provide clearer directions / information and improve the nurses bedside manners.

Forever thankful for Dr George Kofinas!

After years of desperately trying to start a family unsuccessfully Dr George Kofinas was highly recommended to me and I'm forever thankful! His team was very thorough in diagnosing and treating our exact infertility issue. From the office staff to the doctors and nurses everyone was very friendly, helpful and caring. Because of Dr Kofinas I am writing this review while holding my beautiful baby boy! Thank you Dr Kofinas for making our dream come true!

Where to begin, after going to so-called specialists and high-end doctors all over NY for 10 years, we resigned ourselves to be childless. A friend of mine told me about Dr. Kofinas. We decided to give it another shot. Within 10 months I was pregnant with my daughter and 2 years later, we went back for my son. My children are now 21 and 18 and I have Dr. Kofinas and his staff to thank. My husband and I can't thank him enough for giving us our miracles. If anyone is in doubt due to other reviews, believe me you could not be in better hands. Dr. Kofinas is extremely thorough, honest in every sense and will never do anything to harm you or your pregnancy. He was always there for me throughout my treatment in a very caring and loving way.

5 star doctors

It takes special people to deal with frustrated, heartbroken and emotionally and physically drained couples. Dr. Kofinas, Dr. B, Dr. Montes and Dr. Narine, along with a staff of nurses, do this daily as dedicated, calming, and compassionate individuals. The Staten Island, as well as Brooklyn office, has become family to us. We highly recommend these knowledgable, loyal, thorough doctors.

I cannot say enough wonderful

Your rating: 55 1
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Dr. Kofinas, Dr. Brzechffa and the entire staff at the Kofinas Fertility Institute. AMAZING!! Not only are they are top of their game, they are compassionate, courteous and supportive. They made me feel comfortable from my very first appointment, I trust them implicitly. Every appointment was a pleasure! A month after Dr. Kofinas performed my laparoscopy (I had stage 1 endometriosis), Dr. Brzechffa performed my first IUI and it worked-first try! Also Cecilia in billing is an angel. She is so kind and patient, just an amazing person. She sat down with me numerous times to discuss insurance, pricing and payments. Love her! I highly recommend the Kofinas Fertility Institute. They are the best!

Great Place

Happy mom and dad of baby boy

Your rating: 55 1
My husband and I started going to the Kofinas Fertility Group after years of trying to get pregnant on our own, and one year of "actively" trying with my general OB. From the start, the doctors at the Fertility Group were very honest about their process, the decisions my husband and I would need to make along the way, and the fact that this was a journey and a partnership between the Fertility Group and us. They gave us no false promises, but rather honest information, facts and numbers, and options for different plans of action we could take. Ultimately, which path we chose, was up to us. We appreciated this as it allowed us to navigate how aggressively we wanted to approach my infertility issues. While we did see several doctors on staff during the course of our time with them (which is completely understandable when you take into consideration that you are dealing with treatments, ovulation, and cycles that depend on your body and timing rather than a doctor's schedule), our main doctor was Dr. B (as he likes to be called--full name Dr. Peter Brzechffa). Dr. B's mantra was to stay positive and hopeful. I cannot tell you how refreshing this was for us. After years of struggling to conceive, it was a great reminder to us that we should leave the "worrying" up to our doctors and that we should focus on living our lives as happily and normally as we could while undergoing fertility treatment. His positivity will always be something my husband and I remember. As with most people who undergo fertility treatment, the first thing we tried failed. They had warned us that treatments do not always work right away, and sometimes they do not work at all. So we were prepared for this. We ultimately decided that I would undergo a surgery that had been a treatment option, but that my husband and I had put on the back burner as an alternative approach should our less aggressive options not work out. Dr. Kofinas performed the surgery with Dr. Narine. Both were incredibly kind and professional and the surgery went well. Recovery was relatively easy and I am happy to say that within three months after the surgery, I was pregnant! Thanks to the team at Kofinas, I was also diagnosed with a condition that could have caused miscarriage, but was addressed immediately in my pregnancy. They diagnosed this prior to my pregnancy and I was then able to see high risk doctors who specialized in my condition throughout the pregnancy. I now have a healthy and happy 2 month old baby boy! I understand that not everyone with fertility complications has the outcome my husband and I have had. The journey to pregnancy is not easy. But I will say that the journey is made substantially easier when you trust your doctors, and you know that they genuinely care about you and your family. The staff and doctors at Kofinas Fertility Institute cared about me and my family; I do not hesitate to say that. They forever changed our lives, and we are so grateful.

depersonalized care, poor communication skills, truly a business

Your rating: 15 1
I would not recommend the Fertility Institute to anyone. The Fertility Institute (and Dr. Kofinas) is a baby factory conveyor belt, where patients are not treated as individuals with unique health histories, but rather as a number (with a dollar sign over their heads). I will also qualify this review: I did end up getting pregnant through IVF at the clinic, and my insurance covered all my treatments there - so this review is NOT sour grapes because I didn't get pregnant or had to spend a lot of money. I was moved to write this review because of the consistently poor care I received. Dr Levica Narine was my main dr. She is the only person in the practice I would recommend, or that I would give a good review to. She is patient, compassionate, intelligent, understanding, and did take time to LISTEN to my needs/concerns and responded in an appropriate manner (fully explaining the risks, answering all questions). Unfortunately, because of the business model, I only got to see her 50% of the time I was there. Everyone else there leaves a LOT to be desired. The Fertility Institute is first and foremost a business - not a practice, not a healthcare provider. It is clear from all their processes that their main goal is making money. It is a conveyor belt of women who cycle through each day (on some mornings there are more than 50 women in the waiting room). They are a baby factory and everyone gets the same treatment. If you ask questions, or want to know more about the treatments, it is a total inconvenience to them. They don't have time to stop the conveyor belt to give personalized treatment. They run TONS of tests and don't explain what they're looking for, or the results. I had test results that came back and no one said anything to me - 9 months later (when I was finally pregnant) I was informed that because of my earlier test results I had to be on two different medications and was therefore considered "high risk". Why didn't I get these results at the time they came back (9 MONTHS AGO)? I have no idea. Had I had that information earlier, I would've had time to get a second opinion or make some diet/lifestyle changes that could've possibly prevented me from being medicated during pregnancy. (But they probably actually wanted me medicated, because that means more monitoring, more tests, more ultrasounds, and more $$ for them.) When I broached the topic of transferring out of their practice to a regular OB, Dr. Kofinas pulled me into an office for what can only be described as a fear-mongering lecture. He listed all the reasons I'm extremely high risk, and used the word "baby killer" (referring to ATG thyroid antibodies I tested positive for) several times. What kind of practitioner talks to a pregnant woman that way (referring to something in her body as a baby killer)? When I pointed out that I already have a child (conceived naturally, non-medicated pregnancy, who is perfectly healthy) when I theoretically had all these life-threatening conditions, he laughed dismissively and said I may think my daughter is "normal", but there is actually a range of normal and she's probably at a lower level of normal than she could have been, if only I had been in his care at the time. WHAT?! Somehow the conversation went from him telling me how defective I am, to insinuating that my daughter is abnormal (who he obviously has never even laid eyes on). I would never talk to another human being that way, much less someone I was charged with "caring" for. After trying to scare me with threat of miscarriages, physical delays, and mental retardation (his words, not mine) for 10 minutes, he explained that the only way for me to have a safe pregnancy and a normal baby was to stay in his practice, because they conveniently have a high risk perinatologist (his brother!!!). Suddenly it all made sense - fear-mongering pregnant women to keep them in their practice so they can...you guessed it - make more $$$$$. It's a conveyor belt that likely ends with a c-section. This 10 minute conversation with Dr. Kofinas is perhaps one of the worst conversations I've had in my life with ANYONE. He was condescending, arrogant, dismissive, rude, and made me feel terrible. I left his office in tears. I've had clerks at the DMV who seem to care more about my well-being than Dr. Kofinas. The exact opposite of compassionate and caring. I couldn't wait to get out of the room with him, not to mention out of his practice. The nurses aren't great either. I received conflicting information from several of them (they contradicted what other nurses said, and also the doctors), and it just came across in every interaction that they really don't care that much. (They use the word "unfortunately" a LOT). They don't have a lot of critical thinking skills, and it seems like they just repeat the same "lines" over and over again. Again - lack of personalized care. One nurse (completely out of the blue) started talking to me about God when she was drawing my blood - how much she loves God, and how important God is and that if we don't have God in our lives, what do we have. What?! 3 months later, I had a consult with a maternal fetal medicine specialist, who immediately took me off the Lovenox that Dr. Kofinas prescribed, citing that the studies that indicate Lovenox as treatment for my particular "risk" are more than 10 years old, and that this protocol isn't followed by any other clinics he knows of. Additionally, I was on steroids for the first 10 weeks of my pregnancy because of positive thyroid antibodies, and the second opinion I got asserted that I never should have been on the steroids in the first place. The studies that indicate steroids for thyroid antibodies specifically exclude the type of antibodies I tested positive for. The risk of cleft palate/lip is doubled when you take steroids in your first trimester, so now I'm undergoing additional screening for a risk that is caused by a medication I didn't even need. In summary, I would never in a million years recommend the fertility institute to ANYONE. The Kofinas brothers have quite a racket going - run tons of unnecessary tests, use fear-mongering and scare tactics to take advantage of what is already a vulnerable population, and put them on unnecessary medications to ensure they are "high risk" and therefore must stay in their high risk perinatology practice. There MUST be better places out there.

Dr. George D. Kofinas's response

My dear patient. It is always painful for any physician to find out that one of his dear patients wrote a review as damaging to his reputation as your review is to my reputation. For sometime now I have added to my busy schedule another task , which is to check the rating sites and my patients reviews good or bad. I take those reviews very seriously I analyze the reviews , discuss them with my staff, draw conclusions and apply the newly acquired knowledge into our every day practice at The Fertility Institute with the goal of improving the quality of the care, the level of service and the satisfaction of our patients experience with us. We learn a lot from these reviews and for this reason we are grateful to our patients for showing us how they perceive a service as good or poor quality. I am fully aware that no matter how hard we try to achieve excellence there will always be an occasional patient that is dissatisfied and possibly unhappy with the service they receive from us for one or another reason. At The Fertility Institute we strive to accomplish the following two goals.

Our first goal is to make an accurate diagnosis of the problem or the problems that prevent the patient from getting pregnant, make an individualized treatment plan and help the patient conceive as fast and as economically as possible.

Our second goal is to assure that the pregnancy will be uneventful free of complications and culminate in the delivery of a healthy baby that has achieved as much as possible of it's GENETIC POTENTIAL preferably 100% of it.

We accomplish these two goals with compassion for our patients, full understanding of the emotional distress they experience on a daily basis as they go through this difficult journey in their quest for a baby. This effort is supplemented by our vast knowledge of the infertility problem, unparalleled expertise and surgical skills, 30+ years of experience and proprietary technology developed at the Institute in the last 30 years of practice.

In your review you state that I practice fear mongering. Of course this is your interpretation of the information and advice I gave to you in my effort to maximize your chances of going through an uneventful pregnancy and take home a baby as perfect as nature intended it to be.

Regarding your daughter I never insinuated that she is abnormal. What I said was that we don't know if she achieved 100% of her genetic potential.

At this point I would like to mention that patients with problems similar to yours unfortunately experience a 50% pregnancy loss rate if they are not treated aggressively as soon as a pregnancy is established. Again this is not fear mongering. THIS IS A FACT!!! A 50% pregnancy loss rate is too high for me to ignore especially on a patient that went through a lot of trouble to conceive.

You mentioned that we see our patients as a number with dollar sign over their heads.

I am heaving a lot of difficulty to comprehend this. How did you draw this conclusion? Since when is it a crime to be compensated for a first class service you provide?

Last but not least I want you to know that this experience has been twice as painful for me since I know where it is coming from. I wish you had not interpreted what I said the way you did or at least you had called me and discussed all these things with me and to give me the opportunity to explain in more detail all these issues that had troubled you before you take any further action.

To close this all, myself and the staff that took care of you during your treatment wishes you from the bottom of our hearts, good luck, have a joyful pregnancy and deliver a healthy, beautiful and intelligent baby.
