Billing Fraud

I usually don’t go through the trouble of writing bad reviews online, but I had to make an exception here. Although it would be unfair to say anything bad about Dr. Mcavey herself, in fact she was very pleasant to work with and really put my wife and I at ease. However, if you do decide to work with this doctor, please be careful to double and triple check the cost and insurance coverage BEFORE receiving any treatment. My insurance offers a website, where I can search for doctors in their network. I used this search and found Dr. Mcavey’s name. I called the number listed for her, but was told that I should use a different number instead. I called the other number, and spoke to the reception. My very first question was to verify that they accept my insurance. They asked for our Member ID’s and after reviewing them, told us they do accept our insurance. We therefore went to our scheduled appointment with them. Once we arrived, they asked for our insurance cards, took down our information, and proceeded to show us to the doctor. Again, the examination part was fine, however at some point the doctor took it upon herself to perform an ultrasound on my wife. They did not mention anything about any extra cost. When everything was said and done, they sent in the financial advisor, who proceeded to tell us that the office visit was in fact NOT covered under our insurance, and we were required to pay the full amount out of pocket. I argued with them stating that I was assured everything would be covered by the insurance. They argued that was “impossible” and there was no way anyone would have told us that, even though I had an email thread going back and forth with one of their employees, where they explicitly asked for my Member ID of my insurance so they can process my information. Eventually, we ended up leaving the office without paying because they told me they will discuss it with Management, and get back to me. A couple of weeks later, and as I quite well expected, I received a bill, for almost twice as much as they were asking for while we were in the office, because they also decided to charge us at that time for the ultrasound which we never requested, nor were we informed would cost extra. So, now we are stuck with this bill and they won’t even return my calls. I really don’t think this is a good way to do business. It’s such a shame, and I feel really upset they put us through all this. After some research with my insurance, it seems that the doctor’s Manhattan office does accept my insurance, but the office in Long Island does not. However we were never informed of that fact, and instead, were offered each location as equal options. This experience has left us very bitter, and we will not be returning to their offices ever again.
