Dr. Sarah C. Hessler's New Jersey fertility patients may experience infertility from many different causes. Infertility can be traced to specific problems with the male or female’s reproductive organs, the hormones that regulate the sex drive and fertility, or environmental factors that make pregnancy difficult or impossible. However, infertility also can result from multiple factors and, in some cases, the cause is never known.
Fertility treatments offered by IRMS at Saint Barnabas in New Jersey are tailored to meet the needs of each couple. Therefore, a comprehensive medical history, a thorough examination, diagnostic tests and other procedures are required to help your physician develop an effective treatment plan. The initial work-up begins with a personal and clinical history, including illnesses and medical conditions, sexual history and genetic predispositions that may contribute to infertility.
In addition, each partner undergoes a series of basic tests. Additional procedures may be required if more information is needed as a result of the initial screening and/or your history
Based on all of this information, your physician will determine whether conception and pregnancy are likely as a result of treatment, as well as which therapies provide the best chance for success. Even in cases where the cause of infertility is "unexplained," there may be treatment available to help you conceive.
Dr. Sarah C. Hessler and her New Jersey fertility clinic offer the following fertility treatments:
Sarah C. Hessler, M.D. and her New Jersey fertility clinic treat the many causes of infertility, such as specific problems with the male or female’s reproductive organs, the hormones that regulate the sex drive and fertility, or environmental factors that make pregnancy difficult or impossible. Congenital defects, fibroids and other growths, endometriosis, scar tissue and blockages affecting the reproductive anatomy are leading causes of infertility treated by Dr. Serena H. Chen and IRMS at Saint Barnabas.
Fertility conditions that Dr. Sarah C. Hessler treats include:
In 1995, the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science at Saint Barnabas, a New Jersey fertility clinic, was founded on the principle that the highest level of reproductive medical care was achievable only with the continuous support of a strong research program. Over the years, IRMS scientists and physicians have contributed significantly to the field of reproductive medicine, and the patients who received the first benefit from these advances have been IRMS patients.
One of the principle areas of research at IRMS has been in the field of preimplantation genetic diagnosis. The PGD research group has demonstrated, in multiple studies, the benefits of PGD to promote pregnancy and reduce the likelihood of miscarriage in older patients, in patients with chromosomal translocations, and for patients afflicted with recurrent pregnancy loss. Technical advances developed here have dramatically improved the effectiveness of the PGD technology.
Research at IRMS over the years has also focused on oocyte and embryo cryopreservation, embryo culture, micromanipulative procedures to improve embryo development and implantation, and embryo selection protocols. Our doctors have improved cryopreservation procedures, refined assisted hatching and fragment removal procedures and identified and characterized several markers of embryo fitness, among many other advances.
Dr. Sarah C. Hessler and New Jersey's Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science at Saint Barnabas maintain a strong dedication to research focusing on a variety of areas.

New Jersey fertility patients who see Dr. Sarah C. Hessler with IRMS at Saint Barnabas will have their own financial coordinator, who will work with them to address the payment-related issues, including insurance benefits, pre-authorizations, and other payment arrangements. In addition to meeting the physician and other clinical staff during the first visit, our patients also meet with their financial coordinator to review the costs/insurance issues related to their specific treatment needs. Of course, our coordinators are also available to assist if financial or insurance issues arise at any time during the course of the treatment process.
Our experienced Financial Coordinators do their best to be familiar with the insurance coverage and plans, but your assistance in obtaining as much information as possible about your plan is very helpful.
In this process, it is IRMS’ objective and mission to be ethical in its dealings with both our patients and insurers. Therefore, we have established the following protocol for determining benefits and payment requirements for our patients.
- As soon as we are notified of a patient’s intent to receive services, we will contact the patient’s insurer(s) to obtain a benefit quote.
- Based on that benefit quote, we will determine the patient’s financial responsibility, whether that be copayments, deductibles, or payment for the full amount if benefits do not exist for the services provided. Payment of the amount determined is due two weeks prior to the beginning of the cycle start.
- We will bill insurers for all services provided. If the insurer makes payment for services that are not consistent with the benefit quote originally received, we will contact the insurer to be certain that the benefit payment is correct. If it is correct (and the benefit quote was incorrect) we will promptly refund any patient overpayment. If the payment is not correct, we will return the payment to the insurer.
Our objective is for you to obtain every penny of benefit to which you are entitled, but we have a contractual obligation with the insurers to not accept incorrect benefit payments. IRMS is also pleased to offer fertility financing to qualified patients in association with CapexMD.
