Why do couples use gender selection?
Dr. Michael Mersol-Barg, Director, Center for Reproductive Medicine Surgery and Michigan Egg Bank: When we speak of gender selection
or any personal reproductive choice, everybody wants to get in everybody's business.
Now all of a sudden, everyone's nosy, wants to impose their view of the world on everyone else.
Yet at the same time, often, those people don't want government in their lives, which is an ironic contradiction.
I really believe it's a couple's choice of what direction they wish to go in their family planning.
And there may be other underlying issues, historically, within a family, or health issues, but even if it's family balancing,
I really believe that it's a couple's choice and should be on a situation-to-situation basis to discuss.
We have a certain amount of control to this.
There are a lot of ethical considerations that need to be taken into discussion: where life begins, where it doesn't begin,
how different couples even value that.
So, I'm in support of gender selection, but not just at face value. It really requires discussion, introspection,
and seeing where the value is in starting one's family.
